Chapter 6
Whispering Ales and Stolen Emeralds
Autumn 842
Following a harrowing clash against the animated corpse of Hesrel, Gorm saved Doc with a miraculous natural twenty in field triage, allowing the battered survivors to escape the citadel vault with a bundle of red dragon scales.
The Road to Town and the Monkey's Prize
Carrying the unconscious form of Doc away from the oppressive gloom of the citadel, Gorm and Donk navigated the familiar stone corridors without incident, charting a steady course back toward the safety of the surface world. The journey out was mercifully quiet, a stark contrast to the blood-soaked horrors they had left behind in the subterranean depths. Once they reached the open air and put distance between themselves and the accursed ruin, they made camp to tend to their wounds and recover their strength.
During the first night's watch, Gorm took the initial shift, his heavy form a solid bulwark against the dark, followed in turn by Donk. Later, as Doc stirred back to consciousness and took over the final watch, disaster struck. A terrible roll left the halfling priest vulnerable, and when the morning light began to filter through the trees, he discovered to his absolute horror that his prized emerald skull—pried directly from the bronze bull's statue—had vanished. A sharp Wisdom check revealed tiny, frantic handprints smudged across the camp's supplies, the unmistakable calling card of thieving monkeys known for their obsession with shiny trinkets and quick getaways. With their hard-earned treasure lighter by one magnificent gem, the party pressed onward to civilization.
Fortunes Found in the Tavern
Arriving at the bustling town, the adventurers wasted no time turning their hardships into capital. They sold off the heavy bundle of red dragon scales they had hauled from the beastman vault, bolstering their purses before diving headfirst into the local taverns for much-needed carousing and celebration. Having officially advanced to level two, the survivors set about cementing their reputations among the local populace.
Doc took center stage in the taproom, spinning an extravagant, spellbinding tale of the citadel's bronze bull and producing a remarkably detailed sketch of the subterranean encounter. His performance captivated the entire bar, driving a rival crawler out of the establishment in bitter defeat and earning Doc five experience points alongside a loyal new bard ally whose talents would soon aid their ventures. Meanwhile, Donk spent his evening in quieter reflection, engaging a local priest in deep conversation about the gravity of his work and making a generous donation that secured three experience points. Gorm proved equally formidable in his own right, easily besting a rival crawler with a commanding display of dwarven grit that earned him four experience points and the steadfast companionship of a rugged new ally named Grimrock Hardcore, capping off the night with some much-needed equipment shopping.
Yet, even amidst the roaring fires, brimming mugs of ale, and the warm camaraderie of the tavern, a faint unease lingered beneath the surface. The loss of the emerald skull weighed heavily on Doc's mind, and out in the wider world beyond the town walls, deeper mysteries and far darker threats continued to stir in the shadows, waiting for the party's next move.
