How we use AI

Aether Observer uses AI to write your story. Here's exactly which services, what they see, and what they do with it.

What AI does here

An AI model (a large language model) reads what you add, the events you describe or the session notes you type or photograph into a TTRPG Log, and writes each chapter from it. It also checks each chapter against what has already happened, keeps track of characters and places, suggests ideas when you ask, makes comic panels and portraits, and reads chapters aloud if you choose narration.

Which AI services

Google Gemini does almost all of it: writing, reading your events, images and story memory. OpenAI is used for chapter narration, and as a backup if Gemini declines a request.

What gets sent to them

The text you add, the parts of your story so far that the next chapter needs (characters, places, earlier events), and your story's settings. Never your email address, password or payment details.

What they do with it

Google Gemini: we use Google's paid Gemini service, so Google doesn't use your stories to train or improve its products. It keeps logs for a limited time, only to detect misuse. Google's Gemini API terms ↗

OpenAI: doesn't use data sent through its API to train its models, and keeps abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days. OpenAI's data policy ↗

Where your stories live, and other services we use

Your stories are kept in our own database, hosted by Render. What you type yourself is kept exactly as you wrote it. You can export a story's data, or delete a story permanently, any time from its Settings.

Sign-in and passwords are handled by Clerk; we never see your password. Paid plans and token packs are processed by Stripe, which holds card details; we never see them. Donations go through PayPal. Emails, such as notifications and announcements, are sent by Resend, and Cloudflare protects the site from abuse. There are currently no ads on the site.

If you'd rather keep things private

The app can't write chapters without sending your story to an AI service. If you're not comfortable with that, avoid real names and private details. For TTRPG notes, use character names rather than your players' real names.

How it was built

Aether Observer is built by one person, a parent, with a lot of help from AI coding tools. To keep it dependable, about 3,000 automated tests run on every change, sign-in is handled by a dedicated service (Clerk), passwords and payment details are never stored here, and a security review in October 2026 checked who can see what and fixed what it found.

It's still a small independent project. If anything looks wrong, please tell us using the Feedback button at the top of any page.
