Chapter 5
Echoes in the Bone Corridor and the Revenant's Wake
Autumn 842
Following Gorm's tragic fall during a botched ambush, the battered survivors retreated from the citadel's dark halls back to the outer threshold, licking their wounds in the shadow of the silent bronze bull.
The Phantom Trail and the Rag-Wrapped Spectre
The respite near the bronze bull was short-lived and haunted by strange, unsettling portents. Through the heavy, stagnant air of the outer chamber, distant wolf howls echoed against the stone, mingling with a sound eerily like a wounded animal in distress. Soon, pale ethereal footprints manifested along the flagstones—visible only to Kritkrit and a bewildered Doc, who stared in mounting dread as he failed to find any divine or arcane logic behind the glowing tracks. Driven by a grim mixture of curiosity and unease, the party chose to follow the phantom trail, retracing their steps past the trap room and returning to the very site where human wizard Hesrel had met his violent end.
From there, the glowing footsteps led them onward, slipping through a hitherto unnoticed secret door that scraped open into a claustrophobic, oppressive passage. The floor here was a tangled, macabre bed of ancient skeletons, their bleached bones crunching beneath heavy boots, while the walls were draped in rotting, dust-choked rags. As they crept deeper into the chill gloom, Donk stiffened, raising a massive hand to halt the group. From somewhere ahead came the unmistakable sound of a small child crying, pathetic and out of place in the subterranean dark. Through the gloom, a faint bronze glint caught Donk's eye near a row of stripped, rusting weapon racks. They advanced with weapons drawn, only to confront a horrifying sight: a figure wrapped entirely in tattered rags, its hair singed and smoking, wielding a long pole and trailing the very same glowing footprints they had tracked from the outer chamber.
When Donk stepped forward to challenge the apparition, reality fractured. The creature simply flashed out of existence, teleporting through the air before reappearing directly behind the half-orc with unnatural speed. Donk whirled around, swinging his weapon with raw, desperate force to strike the entity for eight solid points of damage. In retaliation, the creature lashed out, plunging the entire corridor into a suffocating, unnatural darkness. In the pitch blackness, the entity struck Donk for nine brutal points of damage, a chilling touch that drained away his vital energy and left him gasping for breath. Reacting purely on instinct, Doc threw his hands up and cast light, banishing the shadows just long enough to reveal the true horror of their enemy: the glowing ethereal soldier was none other than the animated corpse of Hesrel, possessed by a vengeful spirit born from his reckless blood-drinking ritual weeks prior.
The Agony of the Bone Corridor
Panic threatened to fracture the party as the possessed corpse of their former companion turned its wrath upon them. Gorm lunged forward, landing a desperate, though frustratingly weak, blow against the spectral warrior, while Kritkrit unleashed a screeching incantation. Fire erupted from the kobold wizard's hands, casting burning hands directly onto the animated Hesrel and causing the strange rags and singed flesh to burn with an even more intense, unnatural glow. But the creature's counterattack was devastating. With a sweeping blow of its pole, the specter struck Doc squarely, dropping the halfling priest to the stone floor while draining his very Constitution in a wave of draining necrotic energy.
The tide of the fight turned into a chaotic scramble for survival. Kritkrit suffered a catastrophic critical fumble, dropping his defenses and screaming in absolute terror as the horror closed in around him. Seeing his companions falling one by one, Donk channeled every ounce of his remaining strength and swung again, his heavy steel finally cutting down the glowing ethereal soldier and shattering the lingering spirit back into the void. The immediate threat was gone, leaving the narrow passage smelling of scorched hair and ozone.
Yet the victory felt agonizingly hollow as the survivors knelt in the dust. Doc lay motionless on the bone-strewn floor, slipping rapidly toward death as his breath slowed. With desperate luck tokens spent to alter the unyielding weave of fate, Gorm dropped to his knees beside the fallen priest and performed field triage with miraculous precision. Rolling a natural twenty, the dwarven fighter staunched Doc's bleeding just in time, dragging him back from the precipice of death. Battered, bruised, and spiritually exhausted, the survivors searched the aftermath of the harrowing clash, unearthing a heavy bundle of large red dragon scales valued at five gold pieces apiece from the beastman vault—a meager, bloody treasure to show for a fight that nearly claimed them all.
