Chapter 7
Shadows of the Mirror Loop and the Dark Mantle's Grasp
Autumn 842
Following a night of revelry and recovery in town, the battered party prepared to return to the ruins, unaware that old grief and new hazards waited on the road ahead.
The bustling streets of civilization faded behind the travelers as they set their boots back toward the looming silhouette of the citadel. Kritkrit opted to remain behind in town, leaving Doc to take charge of the wayfinding, relying on his keen wits and hard-earned knowledge to guide the remaining adventurers through the wilderness. But peace on the frontier is a fragile thing, and on the very first day of travel, the group stumbled blindly into a bizarre and hostile anomaly.
Without warning, the world folded in upon itself into an inexplicable mirror loop. By holding fast to a trailing physical rope, Donk and Gorm managed to step outside the fractured perimeter, quickly realizing with mounting dread that the spatial distortion was somehow anchored directly to Doc. The moment his companions broke free, a suffocating, absolute darkness swallowed Doc's side of the anomaly. The halfling priest tried desperately to summon a divine light, but the spell failed him entirely; forced to resort to a common torch, he watched in horror as the flame burned with an unnaturally dim, sickly glow that seemed starved of oxygen. Worse still, a deafening acoustic barrier dropped between them: while Donk and Gorm could see and hear Doc shouting from within the gloom, their frantic warnings back to him were swallowed by the strange silence, and Doc could no longer hear his comrades at all.
From the shadows above, a massive, octopus-like horror waited for its moment. Dropping silently down upon the isolated halfling, the creature struck with terrifying speed. Reacting on pure survival instinct, Doc whipped out his crossbow and loosed a bolt, scoring three solid points of damage into the beast's rubbery hide. Instantly casting an invisibility spell, he sprinted blindly down the length of the trailing rope, desperate to close the distance to where he knew Donk and Gorm were running. But the treacherous terrain refused to cooperate; rolling a clumsy five on his Dexterity check, Doc caught his boot on a root and tumbled hard to the forest floor. Capitalizing on the slip, the cephalopodic horror tracked the invisible priest by instinct and sound, plunging its tentacles downward and latching on with vicious suction that drained five vital hit points in a sickening rush.
Guided by Doc's shouted warnings, Donk and Gorm pushed desperately through the disorienting, warped space until they burst into his perimeter, catching sight of the pulsating, alien aberration clamped tightly onto the invisible halfling. Doc scrambled frantically toward them, channeling healing magic into his own wounds, but the beast lunged again, clamping down with renewed vigor for another seven points of damage. Before the creature could drain the life entirely from the priest, Donk roared with fury and brought his weapon down in a ferocious arc. The heavy steel cleaved the aberration clean in half—leaving it with a mere single hit point remaining before its demise. Gasping for air, Doc finished patching his battered frame with a final surge of healing.
