Chapter 12
Chains of the Iron Sieve
Twenty-Third of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Bronwen traded citadel whispers for a heavy brass canal key, sealing a dangerous pact just as Master Pendaran's net closed around the market.
The biting frostfall wind whipped the damp merchant's canvas overhead, screaming through the narrow alleys of the outer market square before tearing the protective awning entirely away. With the fabric ripped back by the lunging snout of a tracking hound, the bitter draft of the outer market rushed in, instantly freezing the residual warmth of Kaelen and Lyra's embrace. They scrambled backward in panic over crates of dried ginger and star anise, their brief, desperate sanctuary shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. Across the crowded, frost-rimed stalls, Master Pendaran’s heavy silver-plated armor gleamed beneath the sputtering lanterns as he directed his guard units to seal off every exit leading from the spice market toward the lower canals.
Before Kaelen could draw his concealed blade from its scabbard, three of Master Pendaran's massive hounds bounded forward, their fangs bared against the chill air, while armored guards poured out from the adjacent stone archways like water through a sieve. Pendaran himself stepped through the converging ranks, his gaze cold, sharp, and utterly triumphant as he ordered his men to seize the fugitives. Kaelen and Lyra were forcibly wrenched apart in a sudden, violent maneuver, their protests cut short as heavy iron-linked stasis cuffs were slammed around their wrists. Stripped of their refuge and bound by the cold court law they had tried so desperately to outrun, the net finally snapped shut, dragging them down into the shadowed depths of the citadel's holding cells as the triumph of Lady Vespera's purge settled over the court like lead.
