Chapter 11
Canvas and Brass
Twenty-Third of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

As Bronwen weighed her options against the tightening net of Lady Vespera's patrols, the broker Varis offered her a heavy brass key to the lower canal gates in exchange for citadel secrets.
Beneath the Spice-Merchant's Awning
Crouched low behind towering sacks of crushed sumac and dried cloves in the outer market, Lord Kaelen pulled Lyra Vane against his chest, their breathing ragged and synchronized against the cold salt-wind of the market. The persistent baying of Master Pendaran's hounds echoed only streets away, but within the narrow shadow of the canvas awning, the outside world vanished entirely. Kaelen's hand tangled in Lyra's damp hair, his fingers tilting her chin upward as his gaze burned down into hers with fierce, possessive hunger.
Lyra caught her breath, her hands sliding up the lapels of his heavy cloak to press against his broad chest, feeling the frantic hammer of his heart beneath the fine wool. There was no space left for courtly pretense or lethal secrets; with a low murmur of frustration, Kaelen's mouth found hers in a bruising, deep kiss that stole the breath from her lungs. Lyra gasped against his lips, her fingers gripping his shoulders as his other arm wrapped tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly to mold her hips against his. The press of his hard frame against her provided a thrilling, terrifying anchor amidst the chaos of the purge, every sweep of his hands over her back and thighs stripping away their defensive armor until they were trembling with raw, undeniable desire.
With their hearts hammering against one another, Kaelen dragged his mouth down the rigid line of her throat, feeling the pulse jumping wildly beneath her skin as she pressed her back against the burlap sacks of cardamom. But the sharp baying of the hounds cut through the damp air, far closer than before. A heavy claw hooked into the edge of the canvas, ripping it violently aside to reveal the bared teeth of a fae mast hound and the looming silhouette of Master Pendaran standing in the alley mud.
The Informant's Price
Farther across the sprawling market district, watching the mounting chaos unfold from the shadows of a stone-arched gallery, Bronwen clutched her woolen shawl tight against the biting wind. The heavy brass key dangled from Varis's fingertips, catching the pale light of the waning afternoon and promising an escape from the tightening noose of the citadel.
Knowing Master Pendaran was closing in on her and that her loyalties to Kaelen were about to be brutally exposed by Vespera's inquiries, she made her choice. She nodded sharply, leaning close to whisper the vital details of Lady Vespera's dawn sweep before snatching the canal key from his palm, sealing a pact that would forever alter her standing within the court.
