Chapter 13
Chains of the Weeping Stone
Twenty-Fourth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

When Master Pendaran's guard hounds closed in on the spice market, Kaelen and Lyra were forcibly wrenched apart and dragged down into the citadel's subterranean holding cells in iron-linked stasis cuffs.
Subterranean Silence
Deep beneath the citadel, carved from ancient, weeping stone that seemed to swallow the dim amber light of the perpetual braziers, the holding cells lay trapped in a grim, freezing quiet. Kaelen and Lyra sat apart on the frost-rimed flagstones, their wrists locked in heavy iron-linked stasis cuffs that hummed with a deadening, frigid magic, suppressing their blood-lineage and chilling them to the marrow. The air tasted of damp mortar and old iron, thick with the stark reality of their defeat.
Outside the iron bars, the rhythmic, heavy clank of Master Pendaran's armored boots echoed down the corridor, shattering the stillness. Pendaran paused before their cell, his sharp, vigilant gaze lingering on them with quiet triumph to ensure the stasis fields remained absolute before he turned on his heel and continued his rounds. In the fractured moments between his inspections, Kaelen tested the links binding his wrists, finding only unyielding resistance, while Lyra pressed her forehead against the damp stone of her own enclosure, her breath pluming in the biting draft. Through the masonry separating them, they traded low, fierce murmurs across the freezing channel, piecing together fragments of defiance against the shadow of Lady Vespera's impending judgment.
The Sluice Gate
Far above the damp cells, where the chill draft of Frostfall swept through the lower arches, Bronwen navigated the slick, mist-soaked stone ledges overlooking the dark canal waters. The air tasted of salt and turning tides, heavy with the suffocating pressure of Lady Vespera's tightening purge. Pulling the heavy brass key traded from Varis out from the folds of her woolen cloak, she approached the rusted lock of the lower sluice gate, her fingers trembling slightly against the freezing metal.
She pressed the key into the tumbler and turned it. The mechanism resisted with a harsh, grinding groan that echoed off the damp stone walls before finally giving way with a sharp snap. The iron grate swung inward, revealing the dark, mist-choked expanse leading out of the citadel's immediate jurisdiction. Pausing for a single heartbeat to look back toward the looming upper spires where Kaelen and Lyra sat bound in the dark, Bronwen stepped through the threshold and vanished into the drafting fog, leaving the court behind to its gathering storm.
