Chapter 14
Codex of Iron and Ash
Twenty-Fourth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Bronwen successfully unlocked the lower canal gates with a traded brass key and slipped away into the mist, leaving Kaelen and Lyra behind in the citadel's dark holding cells as Lady Vespera's purge closed in.
The Iron Partition
Deep within the subterranean bowels of the citadel, the air smelled of stale river damp, old lime, and the metallic tang of magic kept under heavy restraint. Three yards of damp, moss-streaked masonry separated the two cells, holding Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane in cold isolation. The heavy iron stasis cuffs locked around their wrists hummed with a low, parasitic vibration that drained their strength and froze the marrow in their bones, but it did nothing to quiet their tempers.
Kaelen paced the narrow perimeter of his enclosure, the iron-linked cuffs dragging heavily against his forearms with every measured stride. In the adjacent cell, Lyra pressed her forehead hard against the damp, freezing stones of the dividing wall, trying to chase away the thumping ache behind her temples. Their voices, stripped of warmth by the freezing damp, bounced sharply off the vaulted stone ceiling as a fierce, whispered argument broke the stillness of the ward.
"Of all the reckless, unmitigated idiocy, Lyra," Kaelen hissed through the stone, his breath frosting in the dim air as he slammed his palms against his cell bars. "Walking straight into Pendaran's snare in the market square—did you truly think we could outrun his hounds once the wards locked?"
"Do not dare lecture me on caution, fae heir," Lyra snapped back, her voice shaking with a mixture of cold and furious pride as she pressed closer to the masonry, wishing she could reach through the stone to throttle him. "I was the one who deciphered the blood-pact ledger while you were still trying to play politics with Vespera's councilors! If your pride hadn't demanded we salvage every last scrap from the archive, we would be halfway to the lower canals by now!"
"My pride?" Kaelen laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the damp floor. "You carry a death sentence in your veins, bound to a siphon that feeds the very hearths of this cursed court, and you call it pride that I refuse to let them burn you to ash?"
Silence fell heavily between them, thick and suffocating. But beneath the sharp, stinging edge of their mutual reprimands, there was no real malice—only the raw, unquenched friction of two people who had crossed too many personal thresholds to ever look away from one another. In the dark, trapped behind cold iron and stone, their defiance burned hotter than the frost creeping along the windowless walls.
Shadows of the Siphon
The sharp clink of heavy iron-shod boots broke the tense quiet of the subterranean corridor. Master Pendaran materialized out of the swirling drafts, his tall silhouette cutting through the dim torchlight as he paused directly before Kaelen's cell. The warden's silver eyes gleamed with cold calculation, his tailored uniform immaculate despite the grime of the lower levels. He hooked his gloved fingers around the vertical iron bars, leaning in to survey the fae heir with quiet disdain.
"You waste your breath arguing with a mortal whose days are already numbered, my lord," Pendaran said, his voice dropping to a smooth, measured purr that grated against the stone. "Though I must admit, your devotion is almost touching. To risk the entire house of Vespera for a creature tied to a hearth-siphon—it is a treasonous waste of good blood."
Kaelen did not flinch. He stopped pacing, letting the heavy stasis cuffs settle against his thighs, and met the warden's gaze with unyielding, frozen defiance. "You know nothing of what the codex holds, Pendaran. Vespera's hearths are built on theft, and your little purge will not hide the truth once the court learns what is truly feeding the flames."
"The court knows only what Lady Vespera permits them to know," Pendaran replied smoothly, though a muscle twitched near his jawline. "Where are the missing pages, Kaelen? The codex in the vaults was incomplete, and the girl's mind is a locked door for now—but you have always been vulnerable to a well-placed lever. Tell me where the remnants are hidden, and perhaps your execution will be swift rather than lingering."
Kaelen stepped closer to the bars, the cold metal humming against his skin as he smiled with razor-sharp amusement, throwing the warden's threats right back into his face. Through the stone partition, Lyra listened in breathless silence, her hands curled into tight fists against her knees as the standoff hung suspended in the freezing dark, waiting for the next blow to fall.
