Chapter 32
A Breath Against the Iron Latch
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Outside the pantry door, a patrolling guard stopped cold, testing the exterior iron latch with a metallic scrape while Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane hid within.
With the heavy scrape of a soldier's boot testing the exterior iron latch just inches away, time inside the shadowed pantry seemed to narrow to a razor's edge. The scent of dry grain and stored winter roots hung thick in the air, cold and indifferent to the danger crouching just beyond the thick oak. Rather than panicking, Lord Kaelen stepped closer, his dark velvet doublet brushing against Lyra Vane as his boots slid silently across the flour-dusted flagstones. His palm cupped the side of her face, his thumb brushing the cool curve of her fevered cheekbone before tangling in the loose strands of her hair.
Lyra let out a soft, shuddering breath that caught against his lips, the sudden, intoxicating heat between them eclipsing the cold dread of the patrol outside. She pressed into his touch, her fingers curling against the heavy fabric of his shoulders. He pressed her back gently against the tall grain bins, his broad frame blocking the narrow chink of light from the door frame as his mouth found hers in a lingering, breathless embrace that risked everything they were fighting for.
Then, the fragile illusion shattered under the weight of rusted iron. With a dry, rasping scrape of metal against stone, the heavy latch on the exterior of the pantry door lifted upward with a firm, deliberate heave. Lord Kaelen's hand dropped immediately from Lyra's face, his fingers curling instinctively toward the dagger hilt hidden beneath his doublet, his jaw tightening as danger breached their sanctuary.
Lyra held her breath, the dull, pulsing thrum of the ancient hearth-anchor hidden beneath her bodice muffled only by the frantic pounding of her own heart. The aged oak portal gave an inch, groaning softly on its iron hinges as it admitted a thin, merciless sliver of cold corridor light onto the dark flagstones. The guard's booted foot shifted closer to the threshold, the silence stretching until every heartbeat sounded like a drumbeat waiting to betray them.
