Chapter 31
A Breath Against the Iron Latch
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

The sudden physical spasm from Lyra's hearth-anchor caused Kaelen to lose his footing, sending a cascade of copper ladles and pewter mugs clattering violently across the stone flagstones and threatening to expose their hiding place.
The clatter of fallen cookware died away into the drafty stillness of the lower scullery corridor, leaving only the sound of ragged breathing inside the shadowed pantry. Sheltered behind towering sacks of dried lavender and heavy crates of imported spices, Lord Kaelen gripped Lyra Vane's waist, his fingers pressing firmly into the silk of her gown as the sharp stitch of her anchor-pain faded into a dull, thrumming heat.
Kaelen leaned down, his breath warm against her throat, murmuring soft assurances against her skin while sliding his palms upward to cup her shoulders. Lyra gasped softly, her fingers rising to fist in the coarse wool of his doublet, pulling him down until their lips met in a fierce, untamed kiss that banished the chill of the corridor outside. The crimson luminescence of the hidden anchor pulsed directly against Kaelen's chest through the thin barrier of their garments, radiating a deep, intoxicating fever that overtook the cramped pantry space, melting away every lingering fear of the court's decree.
Outside the heavy oak door, however, the heavy, measured tread of a patrol boot stopped cold. A metallic clink of armor rang through the gap beneath the sill, followed immediately by the raspy, deliberate scrape of a gloved hand testing the exterior iron latch.
