Chapter 30
A Fracture in the Hearth's Red Glow
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Sheltered within the quiet shadows of the Grand Kitchens pantry, Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane surrendered to an intense, breathless intimacy, their embrace completely banishing the chill of Lady Vespera's ongoing purges.
As Commander Varis's heavy footsteps finally faded down the vaulted stone corridor outside, the sudden stillness in the pantry pressed close around Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane. Kaelen's hands remained gently cupped over Lyra's shoulders, his thumbs brushing the soft skin of her collarbone as their breaths mingled in the dim, red-lit shadows. But the fragile sanctuary was abruptly pierced when the concealed hearth-anchor beneath Lyra's bodice flared with a hard, stuttering pulse. A sharp, stinging bite of raw heat flashed through her ribs, making her gasp softly against Kaelen's chest and instinctively press a hand to her side as the sudden physical pain shattered the spell of their embrace, forcing them both to step back with wide, startled eyes.
The sudden physical spasm caused by the hearth-anchor forced Lyra to double over slightly, her hand flying to her aching ribs while her fevered skin grew cold with a sudden, clammy sweat. Kaelen, moving instantly to steady her and shield her from the lingering danger of the outer halls, lost his footing on a stray sack of barley and collided heavily with the kitchen staging rack, sending a cascade of heavy copper ladles and dented pewter mugs clattering across the hard stone floor with a deafening ring that echoed violently down the empty scullery corridor, threatening to expose their hidden refuge to any lingering enforcers.
