Chapter 33
A Breath Against the Iron Latch
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

As the heavy oak pantry door groaned open, Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane stood frozen in the dark flagstone silence, holding their breath while a guard's booted foot shifted against the outer threshold.
The heavy iron latch lifted with a distinct, metallic scrape that echoed through the quiet expanse of the Grand Kitchens. Outside in the dim corridor, the patrolling guard threw his full weight against the oak portal, forcing the heavy wood inward by a few critical inches. A sharp wedge of pale, torch-lit air sliced across the stone flagstones, illuminating the scattered pewter mugs and the warped edge of Lady Vespera's fallen parchment.
Inside the suffocating shadows of the pantry, Lord Kaelen's hand tightened instantly on Lyra Vane's shoulder, pressing her back against the cool flour bins while his other hand instinctively hovered near the hilt of his hidden doublet blade. Lyra's breath caught in her throat as the crimson pulse of the hearth-anchor beneath her bodice flared faintly against her ribs, reacting to the sudden surge of adrenaline and the cold draft sweeping over their boots. For a breathless second, the scent of wet wool and pine torch-smoke filled the small space between them, and neither dared to move as the heavy boots of the guard shifted directly upon the threshold.
Caught on the threshold as the oak door swung wide, Lord Kaelen stepped forward into the gap with his hand wrapped around the hilt of his concealed hunting dagger, blocking the guard's line of sight to Lyra in the dim flour-dusted corner. The heavy oak portal swung inward with a drawn-out groan, revealing the grey, sleet-streaked light of the corridor. Before the patrolling guard could cross the threshold or raise an alarm, Lord Kaelen pivoted outward from the flour bins. His boots slid silent across the stone as his thumb flicked the brass guard of his tucked blade, putting himself directly between the narrowing doorway and Lyra Vane. The guard halted, blinking against the sudden gloom, hand instinctively hovering over the iron whistle at his belt as the two men stared each other down in the tense, flour-scented air.
Then, abruptly, the heavy iron latch dropped back into place with a hollow thud as the guard's footsteps retreated down the flagstone corridor, abandoning the immediate search. Inside the cramped confines of the Grand Kitchens pantry, Lord Kaelen slowly relaxed his grip on the hidden dagger beneath his doublet, exhaling a quiet breath against Lyra's temple. The crimson luminescence of the hearth-anchor beneath Lyra's bodice flickered and settled into a steady, low thrum, leaving them alone in the shadowed quiet once more, though the quiet hum of the court's ongoing purge lingered just beyond the oak.
