Chapter 28
The Autumn Rain and the Puddle by the Bark Wall
Friday, September 27th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

As the friends paused to look at the bright purple smudge on the green moss, a cool autumn rain began to fall over Hollowbrook.
The Gentle Drizzle on the Great Oak
Heavy grey clouds drift slowly over the top of Hollowbrook, bringing a steady, soft afternoon drizzle down upon the ancient oak tree. Tiny raindrops slide along the broad green leaves, making a soothing drumbeat against the bark roof of the secret room hidden behind the library scrolls. Outside the safety of the hollow tree, the air fills with the cool, damp scent of wet pine needles and fresh earth.
Barnaby stands near the outer bark wall, listening quietly to the rhythmic tapping of the weather above. He watches silver droplets gather at the edge of the wall opening before slipping down the dark wood toward the roots below. The storm washes the outer branches clean, turning every leaf into a shiny slide for the falling water.
Gathered Safe Inside
Inside the cozy secret room, the animal friends cuddle close together to stay dry while the autumn rain taps against the bark overhead. The sound of the falling water is like tiny drumming fingers on the ceiling. Pip and Clover pull a thick patch of dried moss a little closer to block a tiny draft coming up from the floor near the smooth stone table, while Bramble curls up comfortably on the green floor.
Right near the outer bark wall where Fennel shared her wild blackberries earlier, the steady drizzle begins to pool neatly in the hollow of a thick root node. A small puddle gathers right beneath the opening, catching the soft grey afternoon light. The water ripples gently each time a stray drop falls from the high canopy above, shining like a tiny piece of polished glass tucked safely away inside the dark wood as the friends rest together and listen to the afternoon rain.
