Chapter 27
The Blackberry Basket and the Purple Smudge
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

He watches the quiet light pulse against the dark stone, wondering what secrets might still be waiting for them beyond the brass door as the evening shadows stretch across the moss.
The afternoon sunlight slants through the leafy branches of the ancient oak tree, warming the outer bark wall of the secret room. Inside, Barnaby stands near the wooden opening with a soft piece of dandelion tea in his paws. Beside him stands Pip, watching the shadows dance along the floorboards. Suddenly, a soft tap sounds against the timber.
Fennel, a young field mouse with bright eyes and a patched wool scarf, balances a tiny woven basket filled with fresh wild blackberries just outside the bark wall opening. Barnaby and Pip spot her cheerful approach and help her step safely across the threshold, welcoming her into the quiet warmth of the secret room where the rest of the group is gathered.
Fennel smiles shyly as she offers the ripe berries to her friends. The sweet scent of the fruit fills the cozy space, drawing Bramble the hedgehog and Clover over from their corner to see what all the excitement is about. Everyone gathers around the smooth stone table, eager to taste the sweet harvest.
As the friends pass the woven rush basket around, Clover reaches eagerly for a large, juicy berry at the top. Her paw brushes the rim too hard and sends one dark fruit tumbling onto the damp moss floor. It squashes softly against the green carpet, leaving a bright purple dot right near the edge of the open floor crack where the chilly draft rises.
They all pause to look down at the bright purple smudge on the green moss. A quiet breeze from the dark tunnel below stirs the air, carrying the faint, mysterious silver flicker from the chamber beyond the brass archway as the friends wonder what to do about the berry stain.
