Chapter 26
The Dandelion Tea and the Silver Flicker
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Pip and Bramble settled their squabble over the tangled safety line with Nutmeg's gentle guidance, leaving the secret room filled with warmth and quiet peace as the afternoon light faded.
A Neighbor at the Bark Wall
Barnaby sits quietly on the smooth wooden floor of the secret room, his paws resting near the open brass archway. The air smells faintly of damp bark and sweet acorn tea. Suddenly, a dry scratchy sound comes from just beyond the outer bark wall, followed by the soft crunch of autumn leaves. Barnaby freezes, his whiskers twitching as he turns his head toward the small knothole patch.
A pair of bright, curious eyes blink back at him through a tiny gap in the resin seal. It is only Mallow, a young field mouse from the lower root village, out gathering late-season seeds before the first frost. Barnaby smiles at the shy neighbor peeking in from the outer branch. He sets down his work on the safety line and reaches out to offer a friendly greeting, handing over a tiny acorn shell filled with warm dandelion tea to help chase away the autumn chill. Mallow gives a shy little wave with one paw before scurrying off down the branch, leaving Barnaby with a warm smile and a quiet reminder that the great oak is full of neighbors.
The Flicker in the Dark
After the young visitor hurries away, the secret room grows calm again. Barnaby turns back to his corner and looks toward the open hidden archway across the way. A gentle breath of wind from the inner roots carries a soft, sparkling flicker past the doorframe—not a candle flame, but a tiny, steady gleam of silver that seems to beckon from the shadows of the amber chamber.
He watches the quiet light pulse against the dark stone, wondering what secrets might still be waiting for them beyond the brass door as the evening shadows stretch across the moss.
