Chapter 25
The Tangled Silk and the Gentle Word
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

After Clover accidentally tangled the dandelion silk safety line, Barnaby and Bramble patiently helped her untie the delicate fibers, leaving the group ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
The Tug-of-War Over the White Fibers
Inside the cozy secret room behind the library scrolls, the soft light from the acorn-cap lamps flickered against the damp stone walls. Pip and Bramble crouch side by side on the floorboards, staring down at the fluffy white pile of dandelion silk that Clover had accidentally tied into a hopeless knot. Bramble reaches out with his paws and pulls firmly on one stubborn loop. At the exact same moment, Pip tugs hard on the other end to clear a snag. Instead of coming loose, the delicate white threads twist tighter and tighter together. Both friends frown, their whiskers twitching with quick frustration. Their voices rise as they argue back and forth over who should hold the main strand and how best to pull it free. Barnaby watches quietly from his spot on the floor, blinking his round mouse eyes and holding his breath.
Seeing the two friends at an impasse, Nutmeg steps right between them with a soft hoot. She does not raise her voice at all. Instead, she reaches down with her paws, gently nudging Bramble's fingers away and showing Pip where the center loop is caught. With slow and careful movements, she demonstrates how to wiggle the middle knot rather than yanking on the ends. Pip and Bramble look down, their shoulders relaxing as they realize the frantic pulling was only making the task harder. They trade a quick, sheepish glance, letting go of their annoyance as the worst of the tangle finally gives way under Nutmeg's calm guidance.
Sitting on the Quiet Moss Floor
A short time later, the little group settles down together on the patch of soft green moss near the smooth stone table. Nutmeg smooths out a crumpled maple leaf across her lap and speaks in a low, gentle voice to both Pip and Bramble. She reminds them that pulling against each other only pulls the dandelion silk tighter into knots, just like rushing into the deep amber chamber without a plan would only lead to trouble. Working as a team, she explains, is the only proper way to get their safety line ready for the dark tunnels below.
Pip nods slowly, listening to the wisdom in her words, while Bramble reaches over to give his hedgehog snout a thoughtful scratch. The room feels warm and safe, filled with the faint, comforting scent of pine resin from the wall leak they had plugged earlier that day. As the afternoon light begins to fade outside the hollow oak, the friends lean back against one another, their tiny squabble completely forgotten. They know the long tunnels and the ringing amber floor still wait for them in the days ahead, but for now, the quiet room holds only peace and the gentle ticking of the forest outside.
