Chapter 18
The Amber Floor and the Dandelion Rope
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Nutmeg and Bramble saved the day by soaking up a sudden blackberry-jam spill with dandelion-silk cushions, leaving the open brass archway clean and ready for exploration.
The Honey-Colored Glow
The sticky blackberry jam was safely cleaned up, and the small friends could finally turn their eyes back to the open doorway. Pip and Clover stepped right across the open brass archway into the hidden room. Instantly, they were bathed in a warm, honey-colored glow that filled the secret chamber. The air here smelled faintly of sweet clover and sun-warmed cedar wood. Barnaby ambled over from the stone table, his pouch of dandelion silk rustling softly, and looked around with wide, happy eyes. Together, the three friends stood silently for a moment, simply enjoying the quiet magic of the hidden space they had uncovered.
Looking closer at their new surroundings, Pip and Clover made a wonderful discovery. Instead of rough wood or green moss, the ground beneath them was made of smooth, honey-colored amber. When Clover gently tapped her paw on it, a low, sweet chime echoed through the small space, and the golden light grew a tiny bit brighter. It hummed softly beneath their paws like a sleepy bee, making them giggle with delight.
A Safety Line of Silk
Seeing how bright and mysterious the inner chamber was, Barnaby untied his soft pouch of dandelion silk. He suggested that he, Bramble, and Nutmeg should make a strong, soft rope out of the silk threads so Pip and Clover could hold onto it while they walked across the glowing amber floor. It was always best to be careful when exploring brand-new places in the ancient oak tree. Bramble nodded, his little spines rustling, and immediately set to work with Nutmeg to help braid the shiny threads together. While the rope grew longer and softer by the minute, the friends wondered just how far the amber floor might lead them into the deep roots of the tree.
