Chapter 19
The Golden Chord and the Scuttling Beetles
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Pip, Clover, Barnaby, Bramble, and Nutmeg worked together to braid a soft safety rope out of dandelion silk, preparing to step further onto the glowing amber floor.
Inside the secret golden chamber beneath the old oak tree, Barnaby crouched near the edge of the smooth amber floor. Pip, Bramble, Nutmeg, and Clover watched him very closely. Barnaby held a tiny polished pebble in his paw. He tapped the pebble gently against the pale resin.
A deep, musical hum rose up through their paws. It echoed softly against the carved wooden walls like the chord of a sleeping instrument. The warm golden light caught the edges of the amber. The whole room felt as though it was breathing together with the music.
Right as the final musical note faded, a soft scratching noise came from the dark crevices near the western wall. The rich, golden hum had spread beneath the floorboards with surprising strength. Before anyone could grab an acorn-cap lamp, dozens of tiny, shiny black beetles popped up from the gaps in the wood. They clicked their little mandibles in alarm and scurried in every direction across the stone table and the soft moss chairs.
Clover giggled and pulled her paws up high to let a shiny beetle run past her feet. Nutmeg tried to gently herd a few stray bugs away from the braided dandelion silk with a rolled-up leaf. Bramble, however, folded his paws over his chest and shook his head with a worried look on his face. The hedgehog pointed out that sounds travel very far through the hollow trunk, especially when the rest of the village is quiet outside.
Nutmeg disagreed strongly. She argued that such a beautiful sound could only bring good luck to their hideout. The two friends crossed their arms for a moment. Then they looked at the glowing amber floor again and exchanged a gentle smile, wondering what other secrets might be listening beneath the roots.
