Chapter 9
The Shiny Silver Thimble in the Shadow
Wednesday, September 25th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Bramble the hedgehog shut the heavy wooden library window to block out the chilly autumn draft, keeping the secret room warm and cozy for all four friends as they returned to their tea party.
The cozy secret room behind the library scrolls is warm again now that the drafty window is shut tight. The little acorn-cap lamps cast a soft yellow glow over the smooth stone table and the soft green moss chair. Nutmeg the squirrel is busy looking around the floor when she spots something bright winking from the dark shadow beneath the table. She scurries over on her quick little paws and reaches out her hand. When she pulls it back into the warm light, all the friends crowd around to look. It is a tiny silver thimble, polished so bright it reflects their happy faces like a magic mirror.
Bramble gently taps the shiny metal with his claw to hear the pretty ringing sound it makes. The little chime echoes softly against the wooden walls of their hideout. Pip the mouse thinks it might be a drinking cup for a giant beetle who lives in the deep roots of the ancient oak. Clover smiles and decides it will make a wonderful flower vase for their next tea party, just the right size for a tiny daisy head.
Nutmeg sits down on her custom-fitted moss chair and holds the shiny silver thimble up to the glowing light. She slips it over her front paw, where it fits just right like a cozy little hat for her toes. The friends gather around the flat stone table to talk about who might have left it behind. Bramble wonders if a wandering elf stopped by the treehouse long ago while the library was quiet and the shelves were still covered in dust. Pip nods and says they should keep it safe on the table to use as a special cup when they make fresh morning dew tea every morning. The afternoon sun shines faintly through the closed wooden shutter, and the four friends sit close together, wondering what other tiny secrets their secret room might still be waiting to share.
