The Autumn Breeze in the Library
Wednesday, September 25th, 42nd Year of the Canopy
While sharing crunchy acorn cookies inside their secret stone room, Bramble takes a tumble from a wobbling pebble stool, but stands right back up to shut the window himself.
The afternoon sun is high in the sky, but the great oak tree feels a little cooler today. Outside in the wide branches, the wind picks up a little speed. A sudden gust blows right through the open window of the library, rustling the dusty old story scrolls that hang near the hidden brass archway. Inside the cozy secret room, Pip, Bramble, Nutmeg, and Clover feel a cool draft tickle their noses.
The flickering acorn-cap lamps sway gently on their little strings. They cast dancing shadows against the smooth stone walls. Bramble wraps his quills in a small woven leaf blanket to keep warm. Nutmeg quickly props a heavy wooden block against the archway to keep the chilly air from blowing out their glowing lights. Everyone pulls their pebble stools a little closer to the flat stone table where the last acorn cookie sits waiting to be shared.
Just as Clover reaches for the cookie, a sharp whistle of autumn wind sweeps through the library window again. Before anyone inside the secret room can react, a long parchment scroll flaps like a bird's wing and tumbles right off the edge of the shelf. Pip the mouse darts out of the secret archway and chases the tumbling roll across the wooden floorboards. His tiny paws patter quickly as he tries to snatch the fluttering paper before the wind carries it out the open door and down into the dark roots below the treehouse.
With a quick dive, Pip traps the bouncing parchment under his paws and lets out a happy little squeak of relief. He tucks the scroll safely back onto the shelf.
Feeling the cold wind make his prickles tingle even more, Bramble the hedgehog trots out of the secret room and into the open library. He steps carefully past his wobbling pebble stool and reaches up with his little paws to push the heavy wooden shutter closed against the breezy autumn air. The latch clicks firmly into place with a satisfying snap. The chilly draft stops at once, keeping the rest of the afternoon cozy and warm for all four friends as they return to their tea party.
