Chapter 10
The Thimble in the Floorboards and Bramble's Soggy Seat
Thursday, September 26th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

Nutmeg proudly tried on the shiny silver thimble in their cozy secret room, while the friends gathered close to wonder if it had once belonged to a wandering woodland elf.
The Vanishing Thimble
Nutmeg holds up the shiny silver thimble, proudly showing it off to Pip, Bramble, and Clover in their cozy secret room behind the library scrolls. She sets it carefully in the center of the flat stone table, right beside their glowing acorn-cap lamps. But just as Clover leans in for a closer look, the table gives a tiny wobble.
The silver thimble starts to roll. It spins in a little circle, catches the edge of the smooth stone, and drops right off. With a soft click, it vanishes down a narrow crack in the floorboards of the secret room. Nutmeg gasps and drops to her knees, pressing her furry ear against the dark crack. She can hear a faint metallic clink far below, but the thimble is completely out of reach. The four friends look at one another with worried faces, wondering how they will ever fish it back out from the dark space underneath the floor.
With the silver thimble safely lost from sight down the narrow gap, the friends gather closely around the floorboards. Pip holds a lantern made from a glowing acorn cap while Bramble carefully slides a thin, flexible grass stem into the dark crevice. They listen closely for any metallic clinking sound that might tell them where the precious little thimble has come to rest, gently probing the shadows and hoping to nudge it back up before it slips down too far into the dark.
The Morning Puddle
The next morning, the sun filters through the high branches of the ancient oak, casting warm golden patches across the library floorboards.
Down inside the cozy secret room behind the brass archway, Bramble the hedgehog settles into his favorite custom-fitted moss chair to enjoy a cup of morning dew tea. But a damp spot near the western wall has softened the floor moss, and with a soft squish, the chair tilts heavily to one side. Bramble lets out a surprised grunt as he tumbles out of the seat, sending his acorn-shell cup clattering across the flat stone table and spilling his tea in a bright puddle.
Pip and Nutmeg rush over from the reading corner to help their friend right the chair, discovering that the dampness is leaking in from a tiny knot in the outer bark wall. As they wipe up the spilled tea and prop the moss chair on a dry pebble, the friends wonder if the little leak might lead to more surprises hidden behind the old oak walls.
