Chapter 13
The Amber Hum and the Badger's Tune
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Down in the grotto, Captain Bramblefoot and his companions successfully pried the legendary crystal root from its stone socket, securing a glowing, hyper-warm prize just as the boots of Tax-Guard Captain Vane drew dangerously close.
With the glowing crystal root successfully detached from its stone pedestal, Captain Bramblefoot, Farmer Gilly, Quartermaster Pip, and Barnaby found themselves wrestling an artifact that was not only remarkably heavy but practically throbbing with magical kinetic energy. The amber hum filled the damp subterranean grotto, vibrating through the stalagmites and causing Quartermaster Pip's collection of assorted iron spoons, ladles, and tin cups to rattle violently in his canvas pack before lifting into the air in a clumsy, levitating halo. Barnaby eagerly tried to poke the root with a dried turnip to see if it bounced, while above them, the rhythmic ringing of Tax-Guard Captain Vane's iron pry-bar drew ominously closer.
Hauling the radiant, singing vegetable through the narrow, twisting escape routes proved to be an exercise in utter chaos. The artifact's deep, resonant vibration echoed down the stone corridors, and it was not long before the acoustic frequency awoke a colony of large, blind subterranean cave-badgers. Half a dozen heavy-set beasts emerged from a side-burrow, sitting on their haunches and sniffing hungrily at the glowing vegetable, completely blocking the crew's only exit tunnel with a furry, immovable wall of bad-tempered determination. As one particularly large badger began sniffing suspiciously at Quartermaster Pip's boots, Farmer Gilly frantically brandished spare turnip-skins to no avail.
Realizing the badgers were entirely mesmerized by the high-pitched agricultural frequencies, the old hermit Barnaby produced a battered wooden whistle carved in the exact shape of a rutabaga. He blew a shrill, rhythmic screech that echoed down the damp corridor, diverting the badgers' attention away from the crystal root and toward the cavern ceiling. The discordant tune sent the creatures tumbling over one another in wild confusion, scrambling away into the dark recesses of the side-burrow and clearing the path just in time.
Yet reprieve was fleeting. Only a short distance behind them in the damp mist, trailing the acoustic wake of the heavy cargo, Tax-Guard Captain Vane knelt in the muck of the lower gallery. His iron-gloved fingers brushed against a freshly dropped shaving of glowing amber crystal dust shed by the vibrating root. Grunting with grim satisfaction, Captain Vane quickened his squad's pace through the tunnels, closing the gap as the crew hurried deeper into the uncharted lower network with their singing cargo.
