Chapter 12
The Extraction and the Iron Echo
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Emboldened by the relative safety of the chamber, the group discovered the true glowing turnip pedestal in a breathtaking subterranean grotto, leaving the legendary treasure finally within their grasp.
The air within the glowing subterranean grotto of Oakhaven Deep hummed with a deep, resonant thrum. Before Captain Bramblefoot and his bedraggled crew stood the legendary crystal root vegetable, pulsing with an ethereal amber light that cast long, wavering shadows across the ancient agricultural runes carved into the limestone walls. Yet, celebration was cut short by the distant, metallic clanking of Tax-Guard Captain Vane's iron pry-bars echoing ominously up the geothermal shaft.
Standing before the massive treasure, Captain Bramblefoot weighed his options with furrowed brows. Farmer Gilly insisted with trembling hands that the crystal must be harvested with precise agricultural care, warning that a clumsy blow could shatter centuries of mineral perfection. Meanwhile, Quartermaster Pip, his steamed elbow still throbbing from the flight through the steam vents, pointed out that trying to dig it up with a pocketknife might take hours they simply did not possess. As the thick geothermal vapor began to dissipate into the upper reaches of the cavern, Pip urged the captain to strike immediately while the steam still masked their position and before Vane found the path down.
Above the grotto, the pursuit escalated sharply. Hearing the muffled clink of metal against rock through the venting shafts, Tax-Guard Captain Vane rallied his exhausted squad of tax-guards, driving them to double-time their descent into the lower network with heavy iron pry-bars in hand.
Down in the grotto, time ran out for hesitation. Farmer Gilly, his face a mask of professional reverence, guided Captain Bramblefoot's rusted pry-bar into a hairline fissure beneath the stone socket. Quartermaster Pip rushed to the tunnel entrance, holding Barnaby's heavy steam-valve wheel shut just in case the guards found another route through the dark. With a sudden, muffled pop of ancient mortar, the glowing crystal root broke free into Bramblefoot's arms, proving far heavier and warmer than any common vegetable had a right to be. With the legendary prize secured and the radiant hum filling the chamber, the crew held their breath as the unmistakable sound of boots drew ever closer from the dark corridors above.
