Chapter 14
The Magnetic Clatter and the Silt Trench
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Captain Bramblefoot's crew hurried deeper into Oakhaven Deep with the glowing crystal root, but Tax-Guard Captain Vane closed the gap by tracking the amber dust they shed.
Struggling under the immense, radiant weight of the crystal root through the narrow lower tunnels of Oakhaven Deep, Captain Bramblefoot's crew hit an immediate snag when the artifact's hyper-vibrating amber hum reached a fever pitch. The sudden magnetic surge violently magnetized every metal implement in the vicinity, turning the subterranean passage into a localized lodestone.
Quartermaster Pip's carefully curated collection of iron frying pans, heavy ladles, and reinforced belt buckles tore right out of his pack, floating upward in defiance of gravity before crashing in a deafening, metallic clatter against the stone stalactites. The resulting din rang out clearly down the subterranean corridor, instantly cutting short the muffled shouts of Tax-Guard Captain Vane and his squad as they honed in on the precise noise.
A cascade of iron skillets and pots, yanked repeatedly by the root's magnetic pulse, slammed into the cavern wall with thunderous metallic crashes. The echoes bounced through the ancient stone arches, giving Tax-Guard Captain Vane a precise auditory fix on the outlaws just as his squad readied their heavy iron pry-bars for a final breach.
Realizing the sound of falling iron had completely betrayed their position, Farmer Gilly dropped to his knees in the damp soil. Recognizing that stealth was no longer an option, he grabbed an old agricultural spade found among the First Agricultural Guild ruins and began frantically hacking open a secondary drainage silt-channel, hoping to misdirect the pursuing guards into a false side-branch before Vane's iron-gloved hands rounded the corner.
