Chapter 15
The Magnetic Snare and the Silt-Choked Ultimatum
Autumn of the 314th Year of the Crown

Farmer Gilly had desperately begun digging a diversionary root-trench with an agricultural spade, hoping to misdirect the pursuing tax-guards before their iron-gloved hands rounded the corner.
Guided by the persistent ringing echoes of Quartermaster Pip's levitating iron cookware bouncing off the damp stone arches, Tax-Guard Captain Vane and his squad easily bypassed the false side-branches with practiced efficiency. Vane rounded a slick corner of the lower tunnels to find Farmer Gilly ankle-deep in mud, frantically clearing silt from his improvised diversionary channel. With escape routes rapidly narrowing and the air growing thick with the scent of damp earth and heated ozone, Vane leveled a heavy iron gauntlet at the fleeing crew. A few paces ahead, Captain Bramblefoot and Barnaby strained against the dead weight of the legendary crystal root, struggling to heave the pulsing, warm artifact further down the darkened gallery.
Cornered in the muddy subterranean trench by Tax-Guard Captain Vane and his heavily armored patrol, Captain Bramblefoot and Farmer Gilly found themselves with nowhere left to run. Vane pressed forward with a heavy iron pry-bar in hand, his sharp boots crunching against the wet gravel as he refused to listen to Barnaby's frantic, hand-waving explanations about ancient agricultural zoning laws and historical crop rotation boundaries. The tax-captain's demand was absolute, echoing off the low stone ceiling: immediate, unconditional surrender of the crystal root to the harbor treasury, or face the full weight of Oakhaven's maritime penal code.
Just as Vane reached out a gloved hand to seize the glowing prize from Quartermaster Pip, the artifact betrayed them all. The crystal root emitted a sudden, deafening pulse of kinetic warmth, its amber hum shifting into a violent, screeching pitch. An intense magnetic surge tore through the gallery, yanking Vane's heavy iron breastplate and greaves sideways with brutal force. The tax-captain was hurled violently against the damp stone wall, pinned fast by his own plate armor while his squad stumbled backward in utter, disoriented disarray, leaving the crew a miraculous, narrow window to slip away into the dark.
