Chapter 11
Chants in the Smoke and Steel
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Late Night)
Surging through the splintered threshold, Doc and KritKrit plunged straight into the heart of the sanctuary, confronting a circle of robed cultists around a jagged stone altar.
The vaulted stone chamber of the Sunken Citadel exploded into erratic hues of blue and shadow as KritKrit unleashed his crackling azure fire. The sudden discharge illuminated the grim faces of the robed assembly frozen around the jagged stone altar. Seeking to press their advantage after subduing the outer sentry, the companions fought to seize the initiative before the room could sound a general alarm. Yet the chaos of battle is a fickle master, and magic, even in the claws of an ambitious kobold, refuses to be rushed.
Midway through a follow-up volley of magical energy, KritKrit's scaling tail caught clumsily on a crumbling block of masonry. The snag threw off his stance entirely, causing the azure fire to sputter and cough mid-spell. Instead of a devastating wall of flame, a small backfire showered the damp flagstones in smoking blue sparks and charred the very tips of KritKrit's snout. The kobold stood momentarily singed and fiercely flustered, muttering curses in a rapid, hissed dialect. Across the chamber, the robed cultists, shaken from their initial panic by the harmless fizzle, scrambled to recover their footing, clawing frantically at the hilts of their rusty daggers.
Seeing the magical momentum collapse and the cultists closing in, Doc Greentip knew the opening was shrinking by the heartbeat. Making a split-second internal decision to shield his erratic partner, the jeweller-turned-cleric planted his boots firmly against the stone. He whispered a desperate, fervent clerical prayer under his breath, calling upon his nascent faith to bolster his own steady resolve and draw the cultists' immediate attention toward his heavy armor rather than letting them overwhelm the rattled kobold.
Before the clash could resume in earnest, the leader of the cultists stepped forward from the base of the jagged altar. Undeterred by the intrusion or the lingering smell of ozone and burnt scales, the elder priest regained his composure with chilling swiftness. Raising a tarnished ritual dagger high above his head, he bellowed a scathing, guttural condemnation across the chamber, branding the intruders as profane sacrifices to whatever dark power slept beneath the roots of the earth. His voice rallied the remaining zealots into a synchronized, hostile advance, leaving Doc and KritKrit braced on the frontline as the true weight of the sanctuary's defense pressed down upon them.
