Chapter 12
Flames in the Terracotta Chamber
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Late Night)
The elder priest of the Sunken Citadel rallied his surviving zealots with a guttural condemnation, pressing a hostile advance against Doc Greentip and KritKrit on the frontline.
Facing the recovering cultists within the terracotta chamber, Doc Greentip quickly whispered a desperate clerical prayer, bolstering his own steady resolve as he planted his heavy boots against the cold stone floor. Beside him on the narrow frontline, KritKrit grumblingly tried to restart his fizzled spell, his scaled snout still slightly singed from earlier magical backfires. Before the cultist vanguard could close the distance, however, the tide of the skirmish shifted in an instant. Hesrel slipped quietly out from the shadows of a side archway, bypassing the main melee entirely to bring a heavy mace crashing down upon the lead cultist's shoulder. The sudden flanking strike broke the enemy's formation completely, buying Doc precious seconds to steady his grip on Asterion.
Capitalizing on the profound confusion sown by Hesrel's mace and the blinding flash of divine light Doc summoned from his clerical training, KritKrit finally recovered his focus. Stepping up boldly beside the frontline, the fast-talking kobold successfully channeled his azure fire. The bright, crackling blue flames washed over the stone chamber, scorching the dark robes of the front-row zealots and filling the subterranean air with the sharp scent of ozone, forcing the staggering group back and buying the trio crucial breathing room.
Yet the sanctuary's master was far from defeated. Seeing his vanguard falter under the combined assault of Doc, KritKrit, and Hesrel, the elder cultist priest abandoned any pretense of caution. Standing before the jagged stone altar in the core domain of the citadel, he began chanting a frantic, resonant curse in a dead, echoing tongue. The cavernous air grew heavy with a sickening pressure as the robed leader channeled dark sacrificial energy, threatening to turn the tide of the skirmish before the companions could bridge the remaining distance to the altar.
