Chapter 13
Echoes in the Fractured Chamber
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Late Night)
As the elder cultist priest stood before the jagged stone altar chanting a frantic curse, Doc Greentip, KritKrit, and Hesrel braced themselves for a devastating dark counterattack within the citadel's core.
The elder priest's desperate chanting swelled into a chaotic, teeth-grating pitch that vibrated through the very floorstones of the Terracotta Chamber. Instead of striking Doc Greentip, KritKrit, or Hesrel, the raw, unchanneled dark energy backfired directly into the jagged stone altar. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ancient basalt structure as a shockwave of displaced shadow rippled outward, knocking several remaining cultists off their feet and scattering their obsidian daggers across the flagstones. The sudden magical feedback created a chaotic, smoke-filled window of opportunity for the party.
The surge of raw dark magic proved far too unstable for the zealots to channel safely. As the jagged stone altar cracked down its center with a deafening report, the backlash swept across the stone floor, knocking weapons from trembling hands and sending the surviving cultists scattering in blind terror away from Doc Greentip and his companions. They broke their defensive line entirely, scrambling past the pillars and fleeing into the deeper, darker corridors of the complex rather than face the wrath of their own shattered shrine.
While the dust settled and the panicked remnants of the cult evaporated into the gloom, KritKrit's keen kobold eyes caught a faint, ethereal gleam emanating from beneath a sheared slab of the altar. Something old and carefully hidden had been unsealed by the catastrophic magical feedback. As the smell of ozone and hot stone hung heavy in the air, the party closed in around the smoking ruins to see what the altar's destruction had brought to light, leaving the next dark turn of the citadel waiting just beyond the threshold.
