Chapter 10
Storming the Sanctum of Azure and Ash
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Late Night)
Doc channeled a soothing clerical glow to staunch a minor dart wound on KritKrit's shoulder while they hid from a watchful cultist sentry, leaving their newly sworn partnership hanging by a thread in the dark.
The sharp clatter of the rusted tripwire had barely finished echoing down the damp, subterranean corridors of the Sunken Citadel when Doc Greentip realized their stealth was entirely spent. Beside him, the small, scaled form of KritKrit shifted with anxious energy, his tail lashing against the slick masonry. There was no time to second-guess or creep along the shadows; the noise had carried, and the sentry posted outside the heavy timber door was already turning his hooded head in suspicion, squinting into the gloom toward their hiding alcove.
Before the guard could sound a warning or reach for his ceremonial blade, KritKrit darted forward with sudden, frantic daring. The kobold cast a quick, sharp flick of crackling azure fire directly into the sentry's dark-adjusted eyes, blinding him with a sudden burst of cold, blue luminescence. Stepping out of the shadows with the heavy iron key clutched tight in his fist like a makeshift cudgel, Doc delivered a swift, calculated blow. The impact was clean and efficient, dropping the robed sentinel to the flagstones before a single cry could escape his lips. The immediate path was clear, but the inner door still loomed before them, shielding whatever blasphemies festered within.
With the adrenaline of their successful ambush still singing in his veins, Doc gripped his heavy iron key and exchanged a fierce, wordless nod with his newfound brother-in-arms. Trusting in the compact they had sworn over ale and shadows, Doc threw his shoulder against the timber panels while KritKrit unleashed a fresh burst of sparking blue fire to illuminate the breach. The heavy wooden door shattered inward with a resounding crash, splintering across the floor and revealing the smoky, candle-lit interior of the cult's core domain.
Surging through the splintered threshold, Doc and KritKrit plunged straight into the heart of the sanctuary. A circle of robed figures stood frozen around a grim, jagged stone altar, their pale faces illuminated by flickering torchlight. For a breathless second, the cultists stared in horror at the unexpected intruders; then, frantic hands clawed at sacrificial daggers while an elder priest at the head of the altar began to elevate his voice in a jagged, guttural incantation, seeking to summon whatever dark powers lurked beneath the earth. The fight for the Sunken Citadel's inner sanctum had begun, and every beat of Doc's cleric's heart felt heavy with the true weight of adventuring for life.
