Chapter 3
A Pact in Ale and Ash
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring
Doc Greentip overheard a smuggler discussing the mysterious iron key hidden in his tunic, linking it directly to the legendary vaults of the Sunken Citadel.
The low murmur of the tavern faded into a dull hum as Doc Greentip slid away from his isolated corner table and crossed the flagstone floor toward the hearth. The heat from the roaring fire did little to thaw the knot of apprehension tightening in his chest, yet the revelation from Silas the smuggler had fundamentally rewritten his morning. No longer was the heavy iron key merely a bizarre souvenir of a forgotten night of drinking; it was a compass needle pointing straight toward ruin or riches. He approached the scarred oak table where his prospective companions—a hardened lot of sellswords, scavengers, and rough-hewn cutthroats—were still arguing over a scatter of loaded dice.
At the head of the bench sat a scarred veteran bearing a jagged brand across his jawline, a man known among the local guilds as Garreth of the Outer Wall. Garreth looked up as Doc cast a long shadow across the board, his sharp eyes lingering on the ink-stained fingers of the former jeweller turned apprentice cleric. Instead of turning him away, a slow, predatory grin spread across Garreth's weathered face. The decision was sealed not with prayers or parchment, but with a shallow slash across the palm from a notched hunting dagger and a shared wooden tankard of dark, bitter ale that burned the throat like molten copper. With that rough-edged blood-pact, Doc's quiet days sweeping chapel floors were officially buried.
Surrounded by his newly sworn brothers-in-arms, Doc slammed his empty tankard back onto the wood alongside theirs, the collective clatter drawing the wary glances of the tavern keeper. They were bound now by ambition and the shared ghost of the Sunken Citadel, a place swallowed by the marshes long before any living man drew breath. As the party began pooling their meager copper to purchase provisions for the road ahead, Doc slipped a hand inside his tunic, feeling the reassuring, cold bite of the iron key against his ribs. The path was chosen, the vows were sworn, and the morning mist outside was already giving way to the cold, unforgiving light of a long journey.
