The Weight of the Iron Key
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring
After waking up with a punishing hangover and a mysterious iron key in his possession, former jeweller and apprentice cleric Doc Greentip found himself drawn into a rowdy band of adventurers at The Gilded Tankard.
The air inside The Gilded Tankard Tavern hung thick with the pungent stench of stale ale, wet wool, and roasting mutton, a suffocating fog that did nothing to soothe the jackhammer pounding against the inside of Doc Greentip's skull. He massaged his temples with ink-stained fingers, wincing as a nearby mercenary slammed a wooden tankard onto a scarred oak table with a deafening crash. As an apprentice cleric, Doc was supposed to be spending his mornings sweeping the chapel floors and chanting dutifully over sacred texts, not nursing a legendary hangover in one of the seedier corners of the realm.
Yet, reality had taken a sharp, reckless turn. Deep within the lining of his wool tunic, the mysterious heavy iron key pressed heavily against his ribs, a cold, unyielding counterweight to his churning stomach. He had already taken the artifact to the town blacksmith earlier that morning, hoping for a mundane explanation—a cellar lock perhaps, or a trunk forgotten by some traveling merchant—only to be met with a grim shake of the head and a warning that the dark, brittle metal was forged with craftsmanship no local smith could identify.
Now, sitting alone at a sticky corner table while his newfound companions bickered over a game of dice by the hearth, Doc caught snippets of conversation cutting through the tavern's roar. Two tables away, half-hidden beneath the heavy shadow of a scarred leather hood, a notorious local smuggler named Silas leaned in close to a twitchy associate, his voice dropping to a raspy, conspiratorial hiss. The words drifted across the room, striking Doc like a dash of cold water: a heavy iron key, forged with twin ridges and an asymmetrical ward, worn as a badge of office by the master of the Sunken Citadel before it vanished beneath the marshes.
Doc instinctively clutched his chest, his fingers brushing the cold metal through the fabric. The smuggler was spinning a tale of ancient vaults, hidden wealth, and a lock that could only be opened by a matching key—one that supposedly rested at the bottom of a dry well miles from civilization. The hangover momentarily forgotten, Doc leaned forward, his heart hammering against his ribs as he realized his drunken tavern pact might not be a foolish mistake after all, but rather the terrifying first step onto a road from which there was no turning back.
