Chapter 7
Into the Damp Sough and the Cultist Chorus
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Night)
Working quickly, Doc Greentip mapped out the smuggler's secret drainage pipe entrance to the Sunken Citadel before leading his party out toward the perilous depths beneath the earth.
As the evening shadows lengthened across the cobblestones of town, Doc Greentip led his companions away from the familiar hearth of The Gilded Tankard and out toward the damp, reedy wetlands bordering the old ruins. The air grew heavy with the scent of stagnant water and decaying leaves as a misty twilight settled over the marshlands. Armed with the crude parchment they had bartered so dearly for, and laden with hempen rope, iron spikes, and a flask of precious oil, the party pushed through a thick tangle of weeping willows until they found what they were looking for: the rusted iron grating of the ancient drainage pipe, half-buried in mud and forgotten by all save the city's unsavory element.
Working quickly before night could fully swallow the landscape, Doc drew forth the mysterious heavy iron key they had secured. With a sharp groan of protest from centuries of rust, the lock gave way, and the heavy grating swung outward into the gloom. Doc and his companions did not hesitate; one by one, they ducked their heads and slipped down into the subterranean tunnels, leaving the safety of the surface far behind as they entered the damp sough of the Sunken Citadel.
Deep within the narrow, slick stone corridors of the drainage pipe, the expedition quickly took on a chilling atmosphere. The torchlight flickered against slick moss-covered walls, casting long, writhing shadows that danced ahead of the party. Suddenly, cutting through the steady drip of stagnant water, a faint, unnatural sound echoed from deep within the ruins. It was a rhythmic, guttural chanting, carrying words in a dead tongue that seemed to vibrate directly against the masonry. Doc stopped in his tracks, raising a hand to signal the others to silence; the smuggler's grim warning about active cultists lurking beneath the citadel had proved horribly true, and their treasure hunt had just transformed into a desperate clash against the dark.
