Chapter 8
Sparks in the Sluice and Whispers at the Gate
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring (Night)
Deep within the narrow, slick stone corridors beneath the Sunken Citadel, Doc Greentip and his companions heard faint, unnatural chanting echoing through the masonry, confirming the smuggler's grim warning about active cultists.
The Kobold and the Blue Flame
The damp, slick stone corridors beneath the Sunken Citadel offered little comfort, smelling of old rot and river silt. It was here, deep in the subterranean gloom, that Doc Greentip crossed paths with an unusual wanderer: a solitary, fast-talking kobold named KritKrit. Far from lunging with a rusted spear, the small scaled creature paused, locking eyes with the dwarven cleric as they navigated the oppressive dark. Sharing a mutual appreciation for the perilous adventuring life, the dwarf and the kobold instantly hit it off. KritKrit regaled Doc with colorful stories of his own narrow escapes and shared a deeply held, intensely fervent dream about a colossal, fabled sword he believed he was destined to discover in the gloom.
Intrigued by the kobold's lively spirit and desperate for any edge in the deep, Doc's curiosity spiked when he spotted mysterious fiery sparks dancing at KritKrit's fingertips. Convinced there was much more to this scaly companion than met the eye—and suspecting he might possess latent wizardry—Doc officially invited KritKrit to join their party's expanding ranks. Eagerly accepting the offer, the chatty kobold sought to prove his worth on the spot. He held out his clawed hands, chanted a brief, jagged rhyme, and conjured a bright ball of crackling azure fire that chased away the oppressive shadows and revealed a hidden side-passage leading deeper into the citadel, cementing his place in Doc's newfound expedition.
Shadows Beyond the Heavy Door
With KritKrit now leading the way through a narrow crawlspace known only to the subterranean dwellers, Doc Greentip and his small companion avoided a treacherous drop-off that plunged blindly into black water. The kobold's local knowledge of the lower tunnels proved invaluable as they crept silently closer to the rhythmic, guttural chanting that still vibrated through the stone.
They emerged from the low crawl into a torch-lit chamber just in time to peer across the flagstones at a hooded cultist sentry. The robed figure paced back and forth, muttering in a dead tongue and clutching an ornate ritual dagger that caught the amber torchlight. Ahead lay the heart of the cult's domain, and every breath had to be drawn in absolute silence if they meant to pass the heavy wooden door unawares.
