Chapter 6
Shadows and Ink at The Gilded Tankard
Year 842 of the Royal Calendar, Spring
As Doc Greentip stepped into the alley behind the stables, a weathered local smuggler cornered him, eyeing the heavy iron key in his pocket and warning of a dangerous subterranean cult tied to the Sunken Citadel.
The Smuggler's Toll
Pinned against the damp, moss-greened stone wall of the alley, Doc Greentip felt the cold draft sweeping off the river carry the heavy scent of stale tobacco and river-rot. The local smuggler loomed close, his darting eyes fixed entirely on the strange, heavy iron key protruding slightly from the former jeweller's coarse tunic pocket. Doc's heart hammered against his ribs, but years of surviving behind a merchant's counter had taught him the value of keeping a steady voice when cornered. Rather than shouting for his newly made adventurer companions inside the tavern and risking a bloody brawl in the shadows, Doc chose a subtler weapon.
Reaching slowly into his pack, he produced one of his newly purchased flasks of oil, its metal casing catching the faint twilight filtering down between the timber eaves. He pressed it into the smuggler's calloused palm as collateral for silence and local intelligence. The smuggler weighed the flask in his hand, a crooked grin breaking across his weathered face, before pulling a cracked, grease-stained leather map from his coat. With a stubby finger, he tapped a crude sketch marking a forgotten, half-submerged drainage pipe—a hidden back entrance that would allow Doc and his party to slip past the heavily guarded front gates of the Sunken Citadel entirely unseen.
Ink on Parchment
A short time later, the safety and warmth of The Gilded Tankard offered a sharp contrast to the chill of the alley. Doc pushed through the heavy oak door, rejoining his companions at their scarred wooden table where the clinking of ale mugs and the chatter of travelers provided a welcome blanket of normalcy. Without drawing undue attention from the tavern keeper or the boisterous patrons nearby, Doc produced a blank scrap of rough parchment and a stub of charcoal.
Working quickly, he unfurled the paper across the table and carefully transcribed the smuggler's directions, sketching the crooked line of the drainage pipe and marking the hidden approach to the Sunken Citadel. His companions leaned in close, their mugs pausing mid-air as they studied the altered route, the weight of their upcoming expedition shifting from a standard treasure hunt into something far more perilous. With the hidden path mapped out and their provisions secured, the party began their final preparations, unaware of the subterranean depths and dark cultist whispers waiting for them beneath the earth.
