The Weight of the Stone
Year 1 of the Gloom, Night of the Third Day
As tensions threatened to tear the companions apart, Thalia's dampening spell forced an eerie, absolute quiet across the alcove, compelling Vane and Kaelen into an uneasy, silent truce.
The absolute silence imposed by Thalia's low-frequency damping spell hung heavy in the storage alcove, turning every breath and shift of fabric into a muted ghost. Bound by the magical stillness that smothered their shouting match, the companions brooded on opposite sides of the room. While Vane remained fixated on the whispered coordinates of the master control valve echoing from within the obsidian pendant, Kaelen saw his opening.
Moving with deliberate, muffled care so as not to break the spell or alert the others, Kaelen slipped away from his post. He edged out of the abandoned storage alcove and into the adjacent load-bearing arch corridor, where the dark glass veins pulsed with a faint, steady rhythm that seemed to mock his caution. The air here was thin and cold, smelling of ancient dust and compressed bedrock.
Pressing his palms flat against the cold stone of the primary support arch, Kaelen closed his eyes and let his fingertips read the surface. Beneath his skin, the bedrock sang a dangerous, erratic tune—a rhythmic, violent vibration that matched the beating pulse of the subterranean energy conduit. He traced his fingers along the dark grain of the stone until he felt them: hairline fractures, sharp and spider-webbed, spidering outward across the core load-bearing structure.
It was not merely a theoretical risk Vane was courting; it was a physical certainty of collapse. The physical evidence of imminent structural failure was right there beneath his hands, giving Kaelen the undeniable leverage he needed to halt the conduit plan before it brought the entire cavern down upon their heads. As the muted hum of the vaults continued to echo softly in the dark, Kaelen prepared to take his grim proof back to the rest of the party.
