Chapter 26
The Master Valve and the Trembling Stone
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
Bram forced open a rusted iron access hatch in the secondary maintenance shaft, securing a viable escape route for the evacuating party away from the fracturing vaults.
The atmosphere within the secondary maintenance shaft remained taut and breathless as the companions pressed single-file through the narrow metal-lined corridor. Every step forward was a calculated risk against the groaning weight of the bedrock above, yet the immediate danger of collapse was abruptly overshadowed by a more insidious intent. Ignoring the furious shouts of Kaelen echoing back in the tunnel and the deep, grinding shriek of stressed stone, Vane slipped away from the main column.
Guided entirely by the intense, rhythmic pulsing of the obsidian pendant, Vane squeezed through a narrow service cleft that branched off the designated bypass route. The air grew rapidly colder, smelling sharply of ozone and ancient metallic dust, before opening up into a subterranean vault. This hidden sub-chamber was a nexus of power: ancient brass piping snaked across the curving walls, converging upon a massive central locking wheel interlaced with dark glass veins that hummed with a palpable, terrifying energy. The floorplates vibrated beneath Vane's boots as if the chamber itself were breathing.
Approaching the towering metal apparatus, Vane raised the obsidian artifact. The stone grew intensely, almost painfully warm within the palm of the hand, its internal resonance locking step-for-step with the mechanical thrum of the machinery. By the dim, baleful violet glow cast by the dark glass veins, Vane bent close to examine the intricate, weather-worn arcane glyphs etched directly into the rim of the master control valve. The translation settled like cold lead in Vane's chest: this wheel was the keystone of the artificial night shrouding Whispering Hollow. To turn it was to gamble on a knife-edge—either permanently severing the conduit's grip on the world above or triggering an unmitigated, catastrophic backdraft that would vaporize everyone trapped in the tunnels.
Back in the narrow confines of the secondary maintenance shaft, the consequences of that rising hubris manifested without warning. Thalia, leading the middle rank of the evacuating companions through the cramped corridor, abruptly halted. Her hand flew to her collar as a violent wave of raw, unfiltered arcane energy washed forward through the bedrock, making her teeth ache. Her protective wards, cast to damp out residual vibrations, suddenly flared with a harsh, blinding violet luminescence. The sudden surge was unmistakable; someone had reached the core valve system, and the delicate equilibrium of the deep vaults was spinning wildly out of control.
