Chapter 25
The Iron Hatch in the Shale
Year 1 of the Gloom, Dawn of the Fourth Day
As seismic tremors shook the subterranean storage alcoves and threatened to collapse the spider-webbed arches overhead, the fractured party scrambled desperately to secure their escape path away from Vane's volatile conduit experiments.
The air inside the secondary maintenance shaft tasted stale and thick with displaced dust, stirred loose by the relentless shivering of the deep bedrock. With the main junction behind them compromised beyond repair and structural groans echoing through the stone, Bram slipped ahead of the evacuating companions into the narrow, suffocating gloom of the service tunnel. His boots crunched softly over ancient shale as he pushed deeper, guided only by the faint, rhythmic pulse of his handheld lantern.
Ahead, blocking the vital passage out of the immediate danger zone, stood an iron access hatch sealed tight by centuries of corrosive rust and accumulated grit. Working swiftly amidst the shrill, agonizing screech of stressed metal, Bram wedged his heavy iron scraper into the rusted seam. Using every ounce of his leverage against the unyielding frame, he strained against the bulkhead until the rusted gear finally gave way with a sharp, echoing snap. He threw his weight into the barrier, wrenching the heavy iron door wide open to flood the dark shaft with the promise of a clear route, securing an essential escape corridor just as the distant sounds of the rest of the party drawing near began to echo up the stone tunnel.
