Chapter 33
Shattered Veins and the Breach
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
As the subterranean air grew thick with sulfur and bedrock sang under unbearable tectonic stress, Kaelen resolved that physical intervention was the only way to stop Vane from blowing the master control valves wide open.
The Collapse of the Deep Vault
In the deep master control chamber, Vane's hands tightened desperately around the rusted control lever as the obsidian pendant blazed with an blinding, unnatural violet light. Seeing Vane force the mechanism past its red safety stop—courting a catastrophic backdraft that threatened to incinerate the entire lower tier—Kaelen lunged across the vibrating metallic grating. With a heavy impact, Kaelen slammed Vane hard into the primary console, disrupting the fatal manipulation. The obsidian pendant slipped free from Vane's grasp, striking the reinforced floor and splintering instantly into a thousand jagged shards of dark glass.
That fracture unleashed a concussive arcane feedback loop that shook the bedrock to its core. A thunderous shockwave reverberated through the deep vaults, showering the chamber in choking stone dust and widening the hairline cracks along the load-bearing arches into gaping fissures. The pillars, already critically compromised by earlier resonance tests, finally gave way. Tons of jagged, smoking stone thundered down between Kaelen and Vane, burying the control systems, cutting off the upper valve chamber from the rest of the network, and sealing the two adversaries behind a wall of fallen rubble.
Assault in the Secondary Shaft
Far away in the cramped confines of the secondary maintenance shaft, the massive shockwave rolling through the earth slammed into the party with terrifying force. The sudden drop in air pressure and deafening seismic tremors disoriented the group just as unseen perils seized their moment. Driven by the scent of warm bodies and emboldened by the chaos, the blind, eyeless tunnel predators massed against the rusted iron access hatch that Bram had earlier secured.
With a deafening screech of buckled iron and tearing hinges, the barrier gave way entirely. The creatures poured into the confined corridor in a writhing tide of muscle and claw, instantly plunging Bram, Oren, Thalia, and Lyra into desperate hand-to-hand combat. Swords flashed in the dim gloom and defensive wards sparked to life against chitinous hides, but the sheer weight of the ambush threatened to overwhelm the exhausted party as dust continued to pour from the shaking ceiling above.
