Chapter 34
The Iron Wedge and the Shimmering Aegis
Year 1 of the Gloom, Morning of the Fourth Day
With a deafening screech of buckled iron, the maintenance hatch gave way, plunging Bram, Oren, Thalia, and Lyra into a desperate hand-to-hand fight against a writhing tide of blind tunnel predators while the ceiling shook overhead.
The secondary maintenance hatch buckled under a fresh wave of subterranean tremors, tearing the hinges from the damp stone frame and letting loose a torrent of blind tunnel predators. Chitinous claws scrambled against the flooring, and gnawing mandibles snapped in the darkness as the creatures surged into the narrow corridor. Bram threw himself directly into the breach, his blade flashing in the gloom as he blocked the narrow doorway, striking out against the vanguard of the horde while trying to buy critical seconds for his companions.
Behind him, Thalia fought against the crushing weight of her acute mana depletion. Her breath came in ragged gasps, but as the creatures pressed closer, she raised her trembling hands. Tracing glowing geometric symbols in the damp, sulfurous air, she forced her remaining energy outward, weaving a tight, shimmering aegis that hummed with sudden light and heat. The barrier flared to life across the shaft, forcing the leading edge of the blind predators to recoil with painful screeches from the unexpected radiance.
Seeing Bram take the absolute brunt of the predator assault at the threshold, Oren recognized that individual heroics would not hold the line for long. With his heavy iron-shod pack slung low, he stepped forward with grim resolve, throwing his physical weight shoulder-to-shoulder with Bram and effectively plugging the narrow gap against the surging creatures with brute force and iron.
Yet the metallic shrieks and the sheer mass of the incoming swarm made it clear the rusted frame could not endure. Realizing the hatch was failing beyond repair, Bram made a split-second tactical choice. Ignoring the frantic shouts of the others, he lunges forward, kicking a dislodged iron peg into the final safety channel and slamming a heavy iron wedge into the secondary locking lugs. The mechanism groaned, locking the upper bracket into a grim, temporary impasse that bought the embattled party crucial seconds to secure their footing behind the glowing shield as the dark creatures battered frantically against the other side.
