Chapter 7
Unrest in the Eastern Valleys, Paralysis of the Western Archipelago, and Awakening of the Deep Trenches
Early Summer of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
Armed patrols manned looming wooden bastions in the Border of Whispers while internal fractures at Ironhollow and the Atani Coast threatened the Obsidian Pact.
Ironhollow in Open Rebellion
As late spring transitioned into the early weeks of summer in the fifteenth year of the Obsidian Tide, the friction between occupying Obsidian Pact forces and the working-class citizens of Ironhollow reached a critical breaking point. Following the covert sabotage that left the primary smelting crucibles deliberately cracked and disabled, local laborers and insurgent blacksmiths openly defied Pact quartermasters. Insurgent leaders issued public demands for the immediate return of seized iron implements to agricultural use, effectively halting military logistics in the eastern sector.
Barricades constructed from heavy timber and overturned carts went up across the district wards, locking down the town against military patrols. The sudden defiance forced Pact commanders to redirect frontline troops inward, pulling soldiers away from the contested borders simply to maintain fragile control over the rebellious valley town.
Legislative Gridlock at Oakhaven
A few weeks later, across the sea within the high basalt hall of Oakhaven, the emergency assembly of western island clans descended entirely into mutual accusations and permanent political paralysis. Traditionalist elders and aggressive younger war chiefs locked horns over whether to commit remaining forces to the mainland campaign, hurling bitter recriminations across the council floor.
The debate shattered the remaining bonds between the factions, permanently severing ties and plunging the western archipelago into total military inaction. While the continental war raged on for the rumored seat of power, the western islands stood completely neutered by their own internal division, unable to mount any unified defense or offense.
Tablets of the Abyssal Depths
Further out along the storm-battered Atani Coast, as summer heat began to bake the rocky precipices, marine priests monitoring the churning, bioluminescent surf made a chilling archaeological discovery. Shifting tectonic plates along the shore exposed ancient stone tablets previously buried beneath layers of silt and seabed.
Gathered around the dripping black monoliths, the priests deciphered cryptic warnings carved into the stone detailing the ancient entity rousing beneath the abyssal plains. As rhythmic, sickly green pulses continued to wash across the tepid water and stir the blind serpentine leviathans into a frenzy, the recovered tablets whispered of a doom far older and more absolute than the human war raging across the valleys. The question remained whether any faction would heed the warning before the deep claimed them all.
