Stagnation, Sabotage, and the Tide
Mid Summer of the 15th Year of the Obsidian Tide
As ancient stone tablets along the Atani Coast whispered warnings of an awakening entity beneath the waves, political infighting at Oakhaven paralyzed the western island clans, leaving them utterly divided against the rising tide of deep-sea horrors.
The Western Harbors and Ironhollow Depots
As the dog days of summer bore down on the western archipelago, the total breakdown of legislative order at Oakhaven cast a paralyzing economic freeze across the islands. Trade fleets and fishing craft sat idle and rotting in the western harbors, their hulls scraping against one another in the stagnant brine. Merchant captains flatly refused to put to sea without official letters of marque or protection, while coastal fishers, terrified of the serpentine leviathans patrolling the shallows, chose instead to hoard their meager catches as private barter against an impending famine. This municipal commercial paralysis starved the western settlements of essential mainland grain, turning once-bustling ports into silent, hungry ghost towns where only the sound of creaking timber broke the heavy air.
Far across the water in the eastern valley town of Ironhollow, the Obsidian Pact faced its own catastrophic logistical collapse. Desperate quartermasters attempting to bypass the striking, rebellious smiths and salvage functional iron implements from municipal storehouses found their efforts met with calculated sabotage. Underground drainage systems were systematically breached by underground labor syndicates, sending a torrential deluge of wastewater crashing through the lower-tier storehouses. The resulting flood ruined tons of stored raw ore, dissolved vital ledgers, and rotted the heavy wooden frameworks, entirely wiping out local logistical support for the frontline vanguard and leaving the occupying military force starved of both weapons and repair materials.
Placation Rites on the Atani Cliffs
A few days later, further along the storm-battered Atani Coast, the terror gripping the shore reached a fever pitch as the deep trenches boiled with renewed fury. Subterranean heat plumes hissed through the fractured ocean floor, turning the near-shore waters into a churning, scalding broth of sickly green bioluminescence.
Faced with the terrifying reality of the total maritime blockade and the relentless, rhythmic pulses rising from the abyss, the marine priests abandoned the vulnerable coastal settlements entirely. Clustering on the wave-lashed heights of the high granite cliffs above the turbulent surf, they gathered beneath dark, weeping skies to perform frantic placation rituals. Their desperate voices rose together in ancient, forgotten litanies, chanting into the gale as they cast ritual offerings of blood and sacred oils into the foaming sea below. Yet as the boiling plumes pressed closer to the rocks and the blind, serpentine shapes surged through the luminous green swells in answer to their prayers, it remained harrowingly uncertain whether the waking entity below even noticed the offerings—or if the deep would simply consume them all.
