Chapter 23
Crimson Beneath the Door
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Commander Varis and his enforcers closed in on the Grand Kitchens while Lord Kaelen and Lyra Vane hid in the absolute darkness of a recessed pantry, their hearts pounding as an ancient hearth-anchor pulsed beneath Lyra's bodice.
The Edge of Discovery
The air inside the pantry was thick with the sharp, electric tang of ozone and crushed winter herbs. Pressed backward against the cool stone shelving, Lyra felt the fierce, erratic thrum of the hearth-anchor beneath her bodice radiating a dangerous heat directly against Kaelen's chest. Outside the heavy oak door, the rhythmic, metallic scrape of Commander Varis's heavy iron boots paced back and forth along the flagstones, threatening to shatter the fragile silence of their hiding place.
Kaelen's hands slid from Lyra's waist up to cup her jaw, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone before his mouth met hers in a fierce, breathless demand. The kiss muffled the sound of their shallow breathing, a desperate anchoring of warmth amidst the frozen terror of the court's purge. His fingers tangled deep in her hair, pulling her tighter against him until every contour of their bodies aligned against the cold shelves. For a fleeting moment, the looming threat of execution dissolved into the desperate friction of skin against skin and the heavy, sweet ache of forbidden desire.
Suddenly, the heavy metallic footsteps halted right outside the timber threshold. Commander Varis paused his patrol, his spurred boots scraping the flagstones with a chilling resonance directly against the door's base. Inside the pitch-black enclosure, Kaelen's hand tightened instantly over Lyra's waist while her chest heaved against his, the hearth-anchor flaring into a brilliant, pulsing crimson luminescence that cast a faint pink glow right beneath the door gap, waiting for the iron latch to lift.
The Scullery Smash
High above the vaulted stone corridor, perched precariously on the darkened timber rafters, Bronwen watched the tense tableau unfold below. She saw the glint of Varis's gauntleted hand reaching out toward the iron latch of the pantry door, his fingers hovering mere inches from sealing Kaelen and Lyra's fate.
With a sharp, decisive twist of her wrist, Bronwen jammed the heavy brass key into the rusted brake mechanism of the old maintenance hoist and snapped the retaining pin. A deafening metallic roar instantly ripped through the lower wing as a massive crate of spare copper cauldrons and pots plunged from the ceiling grid, smashing onto the stone floor fifty paces away in the scullery.
Commander Varis jerked his hand away from the latch, his head snapping toward the thunderous crash echoing down the hall. Barking sharp orders to his enforcers, the Commander abandoned his search of the pantry threshold and pivoted his armored patrol away from the hidden alcove, charging off toward the clatter. Inside the dark sanctuary, Kaelen and Lyra exhaled a trembling breath together as the heavy footsteps receded into the distance, leaving them cloaked in shadows once more—though the glowing embers of their secret bond burned brighter than ever.
