Chapter 24
Embers in the Dark of the Pantry
Twenty-Sixth of Frostfall, 412th Year of the Ember Concordat

Commander Varis abandoned his search of the pantry threshold after a sudden crash echoed down the hall, drawing his armored patrol toward the scullery while Kaelen and Lyra remained hidden in the shadows.
Inside the suffocating, spice-scented dark of the Grand Kitchens pantry, the air was thick with the ozone tang of untamed fae magic and the raw, racing rhythm of two lives caught on the razor's edge. With Commander Varis's heavy iron boots pacing mere inches away on the other side of the timber threshold, Lord Kaelen's hands slid firmly around Lyra Vane's waist, pulling her flush against his chest in the absolute black of the recessed space. The ancient hearth-anchor hidden beneath Lyra's bodice throbbed with a hot, pulsing crimson luminescence, casting a faint, rhythmic pink glow that caught the sharp edge of Kaelen's jaw and quickened both their pulses. In the tense silence between heartbeats, the terrifying proximity of the court's enforcers vanished as Kaelen's mouth found hers in a desperate, bruising kiss that tasted of ash and raw defiance.
High above the sprawling flagstones of the scullery, however, the precarious peace was violently tested. Bronwen's calculated sabotage of the maintenance hoist snapped a rusted iron cable, sending dozens of heavy copper pots and brass skillets crashing into the stone sinks in a concussive roar. The vibration rattled the wooden walls of the pantry where Kaelen and Lyra stood locked in shadow. Outside the thin timber door, Commander Varis cursed sharply, his hand aborting its reach for the latch as he wheeled his armored enforcers around toward the noise, barking orders to hunt down the source of the disturbance.
As the commotion in the scullery faded into distant, angry shouting, the pantry settled back into a breathless, trembling silence. Lord Kaelen let out a slow, shuddering breath, his fingers sliding against the coarse fabric of Lyra's tunic until they found the searing heat radiating directly from her bodice. Lyra gasped softly against his collarbone, her hands rising to grip the heavy lapels of his doublet as the ancient hearth-anchor flared with a sudden, warm pulse that illuminated the narrow confines between them in deep rose and gold. In the shelter of the dark, with the court's bloodhounds howling just beyond the walls, the danger only served to fuse their bodies closer together, leaving the lingering threat of discovery hanging heavy in the air as they stole a fragile moment out of time.
