Chapter 2
Shadows of the Bronze Bull and the Blood Bowl
Autumn 842
As the ambient light died, a terrifying human centipede writhed into view in the pitch blackness of the citadel corridor, forcing Doc to desperately cast light once more while clutching the 100GP skull-bearing emerald pried from the bronze bull.
The Citadel Interior and the Skeleton Clash
The journey into the shadowdark had begun with a crude yet accurate map acquired from a drunk, leading the companions through the looming gloom and a restless night in a clearing where a giant wolf lunged from the dark. Doc had taken a heavy blow before retaliating with a crossbow bolt, while Kritkrit had slept right through the attack. Standing before the dense forest citadel—a towering structure rising above the trees with flat thirty-to-forty-foot roofs—Doc used his keen wisdom to survey the entry points. Rejecting the southern tunnel marked by the footprints of many-legged beasts, the party chose the northern entrance with its shattered door and ascending stairs.
Inside, they discovered the towering ten-foot-tall bronze bull statue, its horn bearing an emerald green light and a carved skull. After Doc successfully prized the hundred-gold-piece gemstone free amidst a harrowing corridor trap that nearly crushed them, the sudden blackout and the horrifying apparition of the human centipede had thrown the group into chaos. Yet the nightmare was beaten back, and soon the party found themselves crossing blades with shambling skeletons in the dark. Doc nearly went down under their bony assault before Kritkrit unleashed a massive blast of burning hands, clearing the way as Hesrel stepped in to stabilize the halfling priest. Retreating outside to camp, they took stock of their dwindling supplies—just five rations remaining—before steeling themselves to return inside, finding the bronze bull's emerald light now darkened and dormant.
Asterion's Edge and the Terracotta Relic
Venturing deeper into the citadel's marble-pillared chambers, Hesrel paused to inspect the corpse of a dead, multi-legged purple humanoid matted with salt and scarred around the eyes, inadvertently triggering a water trap that rushed through the hall. Picking their way past dripping green-tinged liquid, they reached an altar where Doc poked around cautiously before Kritkrit stepped up and successfully heaved a glistening blade from the marble, claiming the +1 greatsword known as Asterion.
Pressing further south, the party entered a chamber dominated by black plinths holding wax-sealed terracotta bowls marked with a weeping-warrior symbol. Hesrel immediately identified the objects as relics of a blood-drinking clan. Intrigued, Kritkrit opened a vessel to reveal an internal blade beneath the lid. Seizing the moment, Hesrel cut his own hand, sacrificed a hit point to magically fill the bowl with his blood, and drank deeply from the vessel to restore his lost vitality. As the magic took hold, the bowl shattered into pieces, leaving the companions standing quietly among the terracotta shards near the citadel's interior rooms as deeper mysteries awaited them.
