Chapter 34
The Fluttering Parchment and the Root-Woven Map
Friday, September 27th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

While Pip organized dried clover leaves by the library trunk, the soothing autumn rain pattered against the ancient oak and soft shadows stretched across the floor.
The Quiet Table and the Drifting Scrap
Inside the cozy shelter of the secret room, the steady patter of raindrops creates a soothing rhythm against the thick outer walls of the ancient oak. Barnaby sits comfortably on a woven rush cushion near the smooth stone table, his golden-dust-covered fur catching the warm glow of an acorn-cap lamp. His whiskers twitch gently as he carefully measures a length of spare thread and trims a small parchment scrap with his tiny bone shears. The rest of the village remains quiet and still, leaving the small mouse alone with his thoughts and the gentle, comforting hum of the roots vibrating up through the floorboards.
As Barnaby continues his careful cutting by the table, a soft, damp breeze slips up from the floor crack. The chilly draft catches one of the loose paper cutouts right off the smooth stone surface, sending it fluttering across the room. The little scrap tumbles in a slow circle before landing softly near the edge of the honey-colored amber floor in the adjacent chamber, coming to rest beside a tiny pebble where the cool underground air swirls.
The Old Scroll and the Hidden Loop
Just a short distance away near the base of the library trunk, Nutmeg sits cross-legged while the steady autumn rain taps against the bark walls. With her bushy tail curled neatly around her paws, the wise and calm squirrel carefully unrolls a fragile parchment map tucked deep inside an old story scroll. A fine sprinkle of dried elderberry dust drifts onto her lap as the stiff edges smooth flat under her touch, revealing a faint, faded ink line that traces a previously unseen looping path winding far beneath the amber chamber.
Nutmeg leans closer to examine the delicate drawings, her sharp eyes following the tiny ink tunnels marked along the roots. The discovery suggests that the hollow oak holds even more secret pathways than the friends first imagined, waiting quietly in the dark beneath their paws as the autumn storm continues its steady song.
