Chapter 30
The Autumn Leaf and the Wooden Bench
Friday, September 27th, 42nd Year of the Canopy

As Barnaby stitched his dandelion silk patch to the sound of the rain, Pip joined in with a soft whistle. The two friends shared a quiet moment while the storm tapped gently against the roof.
The gentle autumn rain kept up its steady rhythm against the roof of the secret room. Nutmeg hurried across the wooden floorboards, carrying a tall stack of dry autumn leaves meant to patch a drafty corner near the back. Just as Barnaby turned around from the bark wall with his sewing kit, Nutmeg caught her foot on a raised root seam. With a quick hop and a twitch of her bushy tail, she caught the edge of her woven reed basket before it could tip against the wall. She managed to keep the tall pile from toppling over right into Barnaby's lap, letting out a soft sigh of relief as both friends shared a quiet chuckle over the close call.
Barnaby looked up from his dandelion silk with a gentle smile as a single crisp brown oak leaf drifted downward from the basket. The leaf fluttered through the air and settled right across his tiny bone needle. The two friends shared a quiet laugh over the sudden flutter, gently brushing the stray leaf aside to make more room on the wooden workbench.
Watching the small basket wobble from his cozy cushion on the moss, Bramble folded his front paws across his round belly and let out a playful, whistling snort. He tapped his foot against the floorboards as if scoring a gymnastics routine, pretending to judge Nutmeg's near-spill with a very solemn shake of his quills. That brought a wide, happy smile to Nutmeg's face. The lighthearted tease cleared away any lingering surprise from the close call, filling the cozy space with warm, cheerful laughter while the rain drummed softly outside.
