Chapter 30
The Winding Brass Gear and the Morning Toast
October 17, Present Day
Sheshah sought out Pipkin the clockmaker to discover why magical gates seal shut, prompting the wise hedgehog to set down his winding key and consider what the ticking gears might reveal.
The Winding Rhythm of the Clock Shop
Inside his moss-covered clock shop nestled deep within the thick green garden hedge, Pipkin the hedgehog sets down his heavy magnifying glass and slides a small wooden puzzle box across the polished wooden counter toward Sheshah. The box has three tiny brass gears on its lid that must be turned in a precise alternating pattern. Pipkin explains that magical gates sometimes lock themselves when the daily tick-tock rhythm gets out of tune, and twisting the gears just right will send a sympathetic chime through the wooden planks back by the garden wall.
Sheshah wags her fluffy tail and presses her soft puppy paws against the counter edge. She watches closely as Pipkin demonstrates the first turn, clicking the smallest brass wheel twice to the right and once to the left. The little box gives off a cheerful mechanical purr, and Sheshah joins in, tapping her paw gently against the sliding gears until the harmonious chime rings out through the cozy shop.
Sunbeams and Sticky Toast
A little while later, the morning sun gently rises over Lilly and Blossom's house, casting warm rays across their shared bedroom. Lilly wakes up first with a start, full of excited energy, and says, come on Blossom we have to go meet Sheshah. Blossom blinks sleepily, rubbing her eyes with no idea what Lilly is talking about. Together, sitting up in their warm bed, they talk about the flying dogs and fairies, slowly working out that the entire extraordinary adventure was just a very vivid and wonderful dream.
Sitting together afterward at the kitchen table with sticky fingers and crumb-covered plates of warm toast and jam, Lilly and Blossom excitedly compare notes on the vivid details of their nighttime adventure. Even though they realize it was all a dream, they wonder if a morning walk to the old stone wall might reveal a pleasant surprise just beyond the bricks. With their coats zipped and boots laced, they step out into the crisp autumn air, eager to see what magic might still linger in the quiet garden.
