Chapter 31
The Cedar Dust and the Scattered Cogs
October 18, Present Day
Sitting together at the kitchen table over warm toast and jam, Lilly and Blossom marvel at their shared dream before stepping out into the crisp autumn air to see if any magic lingers by the old garden wall.
Back inside Pipkin's moss-covered clock shop, Sheshah tries her best to help turn the small brass gear inside the heavy wooden puzzle box. With her soft puppy ears perked up and her tail giving a tiny wag, she gently nudges the metal lever, but it catches firmly on a little brass tooth. Pipkin chuckles softly, adjusting his round spectacles, and shows her how a slow, steady breath and a gentle wiggle work much better than a hasty push.
Sheshah tries again, matching the rhythm Pipkin hums, and with a satisfying click, the gear slips smoothly into place, releasing a tiny puff of sweet-smelling cedar dust. With a tiny twing of surprise, she then watches a loose spring snap backward, causing a handful of spare cogs to tumble in a clattering cascade across the wooden floorboards. Pipkin chuckles softly once more, adjusting his round spectacles on his nose, and reminds her that patience is like a slow-brewed tea—it takes a moment to settle before everything works just right. As they begin gathering the shiny little wheels together from beneath the worktable, the afternoon sunlight dips low behind the shop window, casting a warm golden glow across the room and bringing this wonderful chapter of adventures to a gentle, smiling close.
