Chapter 4
The Crimson Dunes and the Basalt Snag
Saturday, October 17, 2026
Knut spent his evening meticulously charting star maps on his wooden worktable with the mysterious brass compass, dreaming of the outer ringed worlds.
Voyage to the Reddish Horizon
The silver hull of Moonship hummed with a cheerful, bubbling purr as it lifted off from the garden dome, carrying Knut and his cheerful wife, Dinkabel, across the starry void. Knut wore his favorite cozy spacesuit that looked like an old pair of underpant shorts, while Dinkabel—sporting her bright rainbow-coloured skin, gentle round eyes, and square-shaped head—smoothed down the front of her comfortable blue tunic. They were bound for the rust-colored dunes of Mars on a very specific mission: to find a large, beautiful shell to tow back and decorate their front garden.
As Moonship settled gently into a vast, dry basin of crimson sand, the hatch hissed open to reveal a landscape of endless rust and wind-carved stone. Stepping out onto the Martian dust, Dinkabel shielded her eyes from the pale sun and immediately spotted a fascinating white fossilized shell half-buried near a low ridge. Eager to bring their prize home, they uncoiled a length of sturdy braided hemp rope and rigged a towing line, hoping to gently maneuver Moonship closer to haul the great shell away.
The Tangled Anchor and the Herbal Tea
Just as they began to pull, a sudden tug halted their progress. Moonship's anchor line had caught firmly underneath a heavy, jagged basalt slab jutting out from the ancient stone outcrop. The ship gave a gentle tilt, and for a fleeting moment, a tiny wrinkle of worry crossed Knut's pink, heart-shaped face.
Instead of rushing or getting frustrated, however, the pair decided to take a thoughtful pause. They sat down together side by side on a smooth, flat rock in the warm Martian breeze, unscrewing a little metal thermos to share a cup of steaming herbal tea. As they sipped the sweet brew, Dinkabel noticed how the basalt slab rested on a natural fulcrum of smaller stones. Working as a team, they collected a pair of flat, sturdy rocks to use as hand-levers, gently prying the heavy slab upward just enough to slip the braided hemp rope free without scratching Moonship's pristine landing gear. With the tether safely retrieved and the fossilized shell hoisted into the cargo hold, they waved goodbye to the red dunes and set a course for home, leaving the quiet mysteries of Mars behind as the stars blinked knowingly overhead.
