Chapter 3
The Tickings of the Brass Compass
Friday, October 16, 2026
As Knut and his wife rested outside their dome home under the silver moon, they laughed about past adventures and began eagerly sketching star maps for a future voyage toward distant ringed worlds.
The Brass Needle in the Soil
The morning sun rose warmly over the smooth, pearlescent curves of the Home Dome, casting long amber shadows across the garden patch where vibrant star-spinners and silvery leaf-ferns grew. Knut, our cheerful pink alien with a love heart shaped head and a glowing warm aura, stepped outside in his cozy spacesuit that looked just like an old pair of underpant shorts, humming a cheerful tune as he reached for his trusty gardening trowel. The soil was rich and dark, perfect for tending to the morning roots.
While pottering about in the damp earth near a clump of blooming moon-tulips, Knut's shovel suddenly struck a small, hard object with a crisp, echoing metallic clink. Pausing in surprise, he knelt down and brushed away the clinging dark dirt with his pink fingers. Half-buried in the soil lay a pocket-sized brass compass, its heavy metallic casing polished to a soft sheen by time. Instead of pointing toward any ordinary magnetic north, a tiny spinning arm made of polished mother-of-pearl whirred to life, ticking softly like a friendly mechanical cricket. The pearlescent needle locked firmly onto an upward and outward trajectory, pointing straight toward the bright, distant path of the ringed worlds they had only just been dreaming about.
Charting the Ringed Worlds
Later that afternoon, after gently washing the garden soil from his underpants-style spacesuit, Knut settled inside the cozy warmth of the dome home. At his sturdy wooden worktable, illuminated by a glowing amber desk lamp, he placed the ticking brass compass right in the center. The soft whirr of the mother-of-pearl needle filled the quiet room as he unrolled vast parchment star maps across the workbench.
Knut leaned in close, comparing the strange spinning needle's precise heading against known charted routes to the outer ringed worlds. He traced the dotted trajectories with a feathered stylus, wondering what friendly creatures, floating islands, and shimmering dust rings awaited them out in the great velvet deep. With every careful line he drew, the dream of their next great family journey grew closer to reality, leaving an open question of what cosmic wonders lay waiting just beyond the horizon.
